Italian DJ and production duo Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, known as Bicycle Corporation, stand in front of a gate with a bicycle attached, holding drum machines and samplers against their faces in a colorful image.

Bicycle Corporation has announced its playlist for Roots episode 170. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music station, promoter, and DJ agency serving the region and a global audience.

Bicycle Corporation is the Italian duo of DJ and producer Marco Mei and the classically trained musician Stefano Ugliano, known professionally as 6884. Together they have released more than fifty tracks and remixes across a broad spectrum of underground dance music, including Deep House, Tech House, French House, Melodic and Techno.

In the early 1990s, Marco began his musical journey as both a DJ and producer, performing at local events before co-founding the Urban People collective. Through this initiative, he helped shape Italy’s emerging underground scene by organising forward-thinking parties and club nights across the country.

This growing reputation led to a residency at the internationally renowned Pacha in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. His ability to command dancefloors and build musical narratives opened the door to bookings across Europe, Asia and beyond, establishing him as a respected global selector.

Stefano, raised in Torino, displayed exceptional musical talent from a young age. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums, developing a deep appreciation for composers such as Chopin alongside the rhythmic traditions of the West African djembe.

Yet, it was the image of the DJ guiding and energising the crowd that truly captured his imagination. Intrigued by the electronic sounds rarely heard on Italian radio in the 1990s, he began to see music as a potential new path in life. This curiosity eventually led him to connect with Marco, and together they formed Bicycle Corporation.

Despite their international recognition, Marco and Stefano remain closely connected to their beginnings. In recent years, they have revisited their early productions and launched a Bandcamp page to make these formative works available to listeners, preserving their musical history while continuing to move forward.

Episode 170 of Roots by Bicycle Corporation opens with a bright, danceable current, moving from the sleek depth of Camino Del Sol into the jazz-rock edge of Jan Ackerman before landing in the loose funk of B.B.Cunningam Jr. Material’s experimental pulse adds contrast, then the groove leans Afro through Go Deh Yaka while James Brown’s edits sharpen the rhythmic focus. Early on, the mood is varied but grounded in swing and syncopation.

As the mix settles, classic funk and Afro currents dominate. Joe Tex and John Pate deepen the pocket, while Jorge Ben and King Sunny Ade bring Brazilian and West African energy. Fela Kuti’s Yeah Rhythm introduces a more modern, acid-tinged feel, and Konk briefly shifts the palette toward post-punk before Lamont Dozier returns the flow to classic disco-soul movement.

The centre of the show balances club edits with broader dance textures. Manu Dibango carries an Afro-soul sensibility, followed by the smoother disco-house feel of Chaz Wankel. Lello Di Franco steers briefly into deeper territory, then Rafael Cameron and Bobby O move the energy toward hi-NRG and synth-driven dance music. The sound becomes more polished and late-night oriented at this point.

The final stretch keeps momentum while widening the stylistic range. Aeo Part. 1 & 2 blends Italo, synth-pop and downtempo elements, while Bill Summers and Bunny Mack return to pure disco motion. Brazilian disco arrives through Quarteto Em Cy before Pino Daniele closes the set with a Nu Disco-leaning house groove, wrapping up a session that moves fluidly between classic roots and contemporary dancefloor interpretations.
