Bicycle Corporation unveil the playlist for Roots episode 168 on Scientific Sound Asia, the Asian underground electronic music radio platform, DJ agency and promoter connecting artists and audiences across the region and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the long-running Italian partnership of DJ and producer Marco Mei and producer Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. Marco’s journey began in the early 1990s, immersed in Italy’s emerging underground scene at a time when house and techno were still carving out space beyond the mainstream.
Through the Urban People collective, Marco organised events across Italy that played a formative role in developing his reputation as both a DJ and curator. This period led to a key residency at Pacha Sharm El Sheikh, which broadened his international profile and opened the door to performances across Europe, Asia and beyond, sharing line-ups with established figures from the global electronic music community.
Stefano’s background followed a different but complementary path. Raised in Turin, his early musical education included classical piano, percussion and drums, alongside an appreciation for composers such as Chopin and the rhythmic traditions of West African music. As electronic music gained traction, his focus shifted toward synthesis, rhythm programming and production, driven by a curiosity that was difficult to satisfy through Italian radio in the 1990s.
The meeting of Marco and Stefano marked the beginning of Bicycle Corporation, a project built on shared curiosity and technical balance. Since forming the duo, they have released a substantial catalogue spanning Deep House, House, Tech House, Disco-influenced material and Techno, always guided by a functional club sensibility and musical depth.
More recently, as earlier releases have completed their original licensing cycles, Bicycle Corporation has made this material available again directly through Bandcamp. This move allows listeners to revisit key moments from the duo’s catalogue while preserving the independent ethos that has defined the project from the start.
Roots episode 168 reflects that history and perspective, drawing from the foundations of club culture while highlighting the musical influences and long-term vision that continue to shape Bicycle Corporation’s sound on Scientific Sound Asia.
Bicycle Corporation 'Roots' Episode 168 opens with a strong Nu Disco and Disco foundation, moving through Dimitri From Paris’ I Like The Music (That You Play) and a pair of War edits that retain the character of their original releases. These early selections establish a clear connection to classic Disco structures while remaining grounded in modern edit culture.
The mid-section leans deeper into Funk and Soul, with tracks such as Jimmy Bo Horne’s Spank, Kool & The Gang’s Open Sesame and Edwin Starr’s Contact. Edits of Marvin Gaye and Earth, Wind & Fire follow, preserving the musical identity of the originals while allowing the grooves to sit comfortably in a contemporary DJ context.
As the mix develops, Afro-influenced material becomes more prominent. Ozo’s Anambra introduces Afro House, while Irakere’s Chekere Son brings Afro-Cuban Jazz, Salsa and Fusion into the flow. These selections broaden the palette without breaking the continuity of rhythm and feel.
The closing stretch returns to House-rooted territory, with Butterfly by Herbie Hancock appearing in a Jazz-Funk driven edit before moving through Disco and House crossover material from Hamilton Bohannon and Hotmood. The episode concludes with My Sister’s Daughter by House Of Whacks, closing the set with a clear nod to Classic House and the enduring influence of disco-led club music.
