Bicycle Corporation has announced the playlist for their Roots episode 156. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music station, promoter, and DJ agency serving audiences across the region and globally.
Bicycle Corporation is an Italian pairing of DJ and producer Marco Mei and the talented Stefano Ugliano, who also performs under the moniker 6884. In the early nineties, Marco began his journey as a disc jockey and producer, quickly finding his place in Italy’s underground scene.
He launched events through the Urban People collective, performing across Italy and building a strong reputation. This recognition eventually earned him a residency at Pacha, Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, where his skills gained wider attention and opened the door to international bookings.
With his career taking him worldwide, Marco performed alongside some of the most respected names in electronic music. His journey on the decks established him as a versatile and in-demand figure on the global circuit.
Stefano, born in Torino, Italy, displayed musical promise from a young age. His passion for piano, percussion, and drums was matched by his admiration for Chopin and the rhythms of West African Djembe. These influences laid the foundation for his later evolution as a producer.
As a teenager, Stefano was drawn to the energy of DJs and the sounds of electronic music, then rare on Italian radio. This passion shaped his skills as a producer and, after meeting Marco, led to the creation of Bicycle Corporation.
Recently, many of their early tracks have gone out of contract with their original labels, prompting them to set up a Bandcamp page to make them available once again. This episode blends afrobeat, afro disco, disco-funk, rare groove, and electronica into one seamless showcase.
Bicycle Corporation Roots 156 begins with Bill Laswell’s Work Song, a funky jazz-rooted track, and Anna’s Systems Breaking Down, which leans into electro and synth-pop with darker wave undertones. Brian Eno & David Byrne’s Regiment adds tribal and electro experimentation, followed by Cat Stevens’ surprising electro-disco piece Was Dog A Doughnut and Chinese Revenge’s Koto, a quintessential Italo-disco cut.
The set moves through fusion with Curt Cress’ The Indian Call, Data’s synth-pop driven AO (No Bungalow), and Depeche Mode’s Shout!. Heaven 17’s I’m Your Money and Herb Alpert’s Bullish highlight how artists from diverse genres embraced electronic instruments. Herbie Hancock’s Junku continues this with an electro flair, while Hipnosis’s reinterpretation of Blade Runner themes and Incantations’ G.A.N.G. reinforce Italo-disco’s cinematic side.
Jean Michel Jarre’s Magnetic Fields Part 1 and Kebekelektrik’s Bolero showcase synth-pop and electro’s ambition, while Klaus Schulze’s Tango-Saty delves into experimental electro-disco. Logic System’s two contributions demonstrate Japan’s early electronic innovations, before Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Mike Oldfield broaden the set into electronic rock and progressive rock.
The final section features Paul Hardcastle’s anti-war electro anthem 19, Klein & M.B.O.’s genre-shaping Dirty Talk, and Konk’s funky Your Life. Kraftwerk’s Tour De France in Francois Kevorkian’s mix delivers electro perfection, before Laurie Anderson’s O Superman receives a minimal synth disco rework. Liaisons Dangereuses’ Los Niños Del Parque adds EBM intensity, with Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Plastic Bamboo closing the set in experimental yet melodic form. Roots 156 is a journey across the roots of electro, synth-pop, Italo disco, and experimental fusion.
