Ezmun presents Cooking With Gas episode 11, a two-hour dubstep special on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Cooking With Gas is Ezmun's weekly selection of percussive, groovy and dark music. Episode 11 brings together two hours of dubby, minimal, dark and percussive dubstep, with a handful of tougher selections.
Ezmun is originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom and relocated to Vietnam to develop his ambitions as a DJ and producer. The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily took him to Melbourne, from where he released a weekly show centred on his favourite sounds.
Like many DJs, Ezmun began in his bedroom before moving on to house parties with close friends and cohorts. In 2019, he began playing clubs in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City.
Drawn to the sparse atmosphere of minimal half-time 140s and the forceful clatter of percussive leftfield bass, he uses both as peaks and troughs within an energetic techno setting. His work was gaining attention in Vietnam, while he planned to explore Melbourne's underground scene and develop his production skills with the intention of releasing his own music the following year.
Cooking With Gas also gives Ezmun space to showcase friends and undiscovered DJs. The programme lets him examine the genres he loves in greater detail.
Ezmun's Cooking With Gas episode 11 dubstep special opens with Dubkasm's Victory in Mala's remix on Dubkasm Records, bringing a Reggae foundation to the set. Blind Prophet and Bukkha follow with Stone dub VIP on Moonshine Recordings, placing its heavy Dub pressure alongside RSD's Jah Way on Punch Drunk Records.
Digital Mystikz's Molten on Tectonic establishes the programme's Dubstep focus, before dBridge's Fashion Dread on Sentry Records deepens the low-end atmosphere. Mystik and Pugilist's Misty In Roots on Modern Hypnosis keeps the 140 / deep dubstep / grime rhythm in view, while Perverse's Tribute on Boka Records adds another tense, stripped-back cut.
Kahn's Dread and Goth Trad's Cut End, both on Deep Medi Musik, sharpen the set's austere 140 / deep dubstep / grime edge. MRK1's Slope on Planet Mu and Kwizma's Hitman on Deep Dark & Dangerous take the selection through weighty percussion before Loefah's Midnight on Berceuse Heroique.
Ishan Sound's Kahn remix of Namkha on Tectonic introduces an Electronica texture without losing the programme's shadowy pace. Gantz's Spry Sinister on Deep Medi Musik and AxH's Destroy on Tempa restore the 140 / deep dubstep / grime tension through clipped rhythms and bass weight.
Pugilist's Dream State on Modern Hypnosis, Geode's Portal and Congi and Jafu's December on Chord Marauders hold the middle section in dubstep territory. Hypho and Xakra's Bufo Alvarius on Encrypted Audio and Biome and Fallen 45's Lost on Rinse then push the 140 / deep dubstep / grime approach towards a firmer, more percussive close.
Perverse and Gantz's Seismic on Boka Records leads into Lag's Sama Doma on Mord, where the set reaches Peak Time Techno. Dark Sky's Double U on Tectonic and TenTwentySeven's Cogs on MAJÍA bring Electronica and Bass / Club elements into the final stretch, before Giant's Iron Man on HENCH and The Bug's Angry featuring Tippa Irie on Ninja Tune finish with dubstep force and trap-informed intensity.
