Disc jockey duo Many Hands (Berlin/UK) have revealed the playlist for Basement Soul episode 44. Scientific Sound Asia is the Asian electronic music station for expatriates and locals across the region and internationally, continuing to champion quality underground sounds from around the world.
Many Hands is the creation of musically absorbed and wide-ranging DJs Jona J and Kava. Jona, whose real name is Jona Jefferies, was born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK. His journey as a DJ began in the early 1990s within the free party and rave movement of southwest England. Later, a move to Ibiza introduced him to the island’s Balearic sound and hedonistic culture, which left a lasting mark on his musical direction.
After his time in Ibiza, Jona relocated to Bristol, immersing himself in the city’s sound system culture and urban bass scene, refining his art over several years. A free spirit by nature, he later became part of Berlin’s international underground community, performing at a wide range of venues across the city. In 2020, he returned to the UK while continuing to stay active on the European circuit.
Jona’s release Nocturnal, a collaboration with his longtime friend Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering under the alias Sapience, was signed to Tom Middleton’s Sound of the Cosmos label. The track gained critical attention and airplay from influential selectors including Gilles Peterson, Mala, and Laurent Garnier.
Kava, originally from New Zealand, has lived in Berlin for over a decade. His musical background began in Wellington’s vibrant scene, where he absorbed a mix of soul, bashment, hip hop, disco, house, techno, and drum and bass. Before relocating to Germany, he worked in vinyl retail and hosted numerous radio shows across New Zealand, becoming a key figure in his local community.
Upon arriving in Berlin, Kava quickly made his mark as a resident DJ and co-host of the monthly radio show Float Some and Jet Some with Rodi Kirk (Scratch 22) on the former Berlin Community Radio. His performances have since taken him across many of the city’s best-loved venues, where he continues to share his eclectic and soulful sound.
The two met through a mutual friend near OYE Records in Berlin and instantly recognised their shared passion for deep, rhythm-driven music. Their creative chemistry gave rise to Many Hands, a project that brings together dance, diversity, and discovery. Their regular Basement Soul sessions, born from an intimate Berlin basement party, celebrate everything that moves body and spirit.
Musically, Many Hands navigate the rhythmic and cultural spectrum. Disco, soul, Latin, and Afrobeat flow effortlessly into MPC-driven edits, dub-infused beats, and machine funk. Their selections echo Jamaicans in New York, West Africans on synths, and European groove pioneers, creating a sound that is both exploratory and rooted in dancefloor connection.
True record collectors and sound investigators, Jona J and Kava are 80s kids shaped by years of nocturnal discovery in dark basements and on heavy sound systems. Basement Soul reflects that lifelong education, an open invitation to move, listen, and celebrate the global language of rhythm together.
Many Hands Basement Soul 44 opens with Alex Kassian’s Leave Your Life and Reuben Vaun Smith’s Eternal Return, Basement Soul 44 sets a lush electronic tone where Electronica and Synthpop melt into soulful textures. Little Simz’s Point and Kill featuring Obongjayar and John Beltran’s Entardecer shift the energy toward Avant-Garde Hip Hop and Organic House, capturing the global reach of the duo’s crate.
The groove broadens with vintage flair as Al-Dos Band’s Doing Our Thing With Pride and Captain Mosez’s Fly Cherry Fly weave Disco, Boogie and Funk. Helen’s Zanzibar and Nonna Fab’s Fab’s Space Dance evoke the shimmering pulse of Italo-Disco, while JD Twitch’s Maya delivers Afro House percussion balanced by soulful depth. Each transition connects eras and cultures effortlessly.
Mid-set warmth arrives through deeper selections such as Simbad’s Soulful Jam, Mike Clark’s In My Arms, and WheelUP’s We Shape the Future, fusing Deep House and Funky House rhythm with heartfelt melodies. Kameelah Waheed’s America the Beautiful and Social Lovers’ Higher extend the blend toward Soulful Deep House, showcasing Many Hands’ balance between groove and message.
As the set winds down, Reggae and Dub atmospheres emerge with Om Unit’s Bristol Theme and Cruisic’s slow-burn remix of Inspector Norse. Nu Disco and Jazz-Funk shine through The Vendetta Suite and Fuga Ronto, wrapping Basement Soul 44 in warm analogue colour. Many Hands once again bridge genres and decades, proving that Deep House, Disco, and Reggae can exist in perfect harmony under the banner of Scientific Sound Asia.
