Tech Funk developed during the late 1990s and 2000s from the overlap between Breaks, Techno, House and Electro. The style combined syncopated rhythms and heavy bass with the tighter percussion and synthetic textures associated with club-focused electronic music.
Its foundations trace back to Nu Skool Breaks, Electro Breaks, Progressive Breaks and early Tech House. Producers used broken drum patterns, distorted basslines, filtered samples and electronic effects to build music that could sit between Breakbeat and four-to-the-floor club sets.
Artists including Meat Katie, Elite Force, Dylan Rhymes and Lee Coombs became closely associated with the sound. Their productions often mixed Funk-influenced grooves with harder Techno percussion, Electro bass and sharply edited arrangements.
Tech Funk commonly features punchy breakbeats, rolling low frequencies, mechanical synthesisers and short vocal or instrumental samples. Some tracks lean toward Breaks, while others use a stronger House or Techno pulse without losing the style's rhythmic swing.
The category became particularly visible through British clubs, independent labels and specialist DJ sets during the 2000s. It also overlapped with Bass Music, Electro House and darker forms of Progressive Breaks as production methods grew heavier and more digital.
Tech Funk is best understood as a crossover category for rhythm-led electronic music that connects Funk, Breakbeat, Techno and Electro. Its defining character comes from broken grooves, forceful bass and club arrangements that balance mechanical precision with syncopated movement.
At Scientific Sound Asia, tech funk is a defining feature of Play It Loud, with the category effectively synonymous with that show on the site.
