Marco Mei announces playlist for new show 6th March 2021
Marco Mei's 6th March 2021 radio show delivers a fresh mix of Deep House, Electro, House and Indie Dance tracks…
Jazz developed in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from African American musical traditions, blues, ragtime, spirituals and brass-band music. New Orleans became one of its most important early centres, where collective improvisation, syncopation and strong rhythmic interplay helped establish the genre's foundations.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Jazz expanded through swing, big bands and increasingly sophisticated arrangements. Artists including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Billie Holiday brought the music to wider audiences while developing new approaches to solo performance, composition and vocal interpretation.
Bebop emerged during the 1940s through musicians including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Its faster tempos, complex harmonies and extended improvisation pushed Jazz toward a more concentrated listening form, and shaped later styles including hard bop, modal Jazz and free Jazz.
Jazz Fusion developed during the late 1960s and 1970s by combining Jazz improvisation with Rock, Funk and electronic instruments. Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Return to Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra brought synthesisers, electric bass, amplified keyboards and studio production into the wider Jazz language.
Later movements included spiritual Jazz, acid Jazz, nu-jazz and electronic Jazz, bringing the genre into contact with Hip Hop, House, Drum and Bass, Soul and experimental electronic music. Sampling, programmed beats and digital production let producers reinterpret Jazz harmony, instrumentation and improvisation within new rhythmic settings.
The Jazz Music category can include traditional Jazz, swing, bebop, hard bop, modal Jazz, free Jazz, Jazz-Funk, Fusion, acid Jazz, nu-jazz and modern electronic interpretations. Its classification is broad because the genre is connected less by one fixed sound than by improvisation, rhythmic interaction, harmonic exploration and musical exchange.
