Many Hands DJ Duo release track list for ‘Basement Soul’ 42.
Many Hands Duo drop 'Basement Soul' 42, blending Deep House, Drum and Bass and Nu Disco into a fresh, genre-hopping…
Disco developed in the United States during the early 1970s through Black, Latino and LGBTQ+ club communities in cities including New York and Philadelphia. Its foundations drew on soul, funk, Latin music and orchestral pop, with extended arrangements built to support continuous dancing.
DJs played a central role, selecting records for private clubs, loft parties and underground dance floors. Producers and remixers responded by lengthening instrumental sections, strengthening percussion and creating twelve-inch singles that gave DJs more flexible material to mix.
Philadelphia International Records helped establish the orchestral side of Disco through artists and producers connected with the Philadelphia soul sound. In New York, figures including Tom Moulton, Larry Levan and Walter Gibbons advanced the remix, while clubs such as The Loft, Paradise Garage and Studio 54 each brought a different version of Disco culture to life.
Artists including Donna Summer, Chic, Gloria Gaynor, Sylvester, Cerrone and Giorgio Moroder carried the music to international audiences through the second half of the 1970s. Their recordings used string sections, rhythm guitars, prominent basslines, four-to-the-floor drums and increasingly electronic production.
Disco faced a commercial backlash in the United States at the end of the 1970s, but its musical ideas didn't disappear. The genre fed into post-disco, boogie, Hi-NRG and electronic dance music, and its production methods became central to House, Garage House and many later club styles.
The Disco category can include orchestral recordings, electronic productions, underground club music and later releases that keep the genre's rhythmic and musical character. Its defining features stay constant: a steady dance pulse, prominent bass, repeated grooves and arrangements built around movement, mixing and extended play.
At Scientific Sound Asia, disco is a defining feature of Roots, with further appearances on Basement Soul and Electronic Roots.
