Afro House

Putting The Science Into Music

Afro House developed primarily within South Africa's house music culture during the 1990s and 2000s, though its foundations reach back to earlier local interpretations of imported house records. Producers combined four-to-the-floor rhythms with African percussion, layered vocals, deep basslines and musical traditions drawn from across the continent.

South African styles including kwaito, soulful house and deep house all fed into its early development. DJs and producers adapted these influences for township parties, clubs and radio audiences, building something with its own regional identity rather than simply reproducing American or European house.

Artists including Oskido, DJ Christos, Vinny Da Vinci and the group Revolution helped establish South African house music before Afro House became widely used as a separate genre name. Later figures such as Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, Da Capo, Black Motion, Shimza and Enoo Napa carried different interpretations of the style to international audiences.

Afro House commonly favours polyrhythmic percussion, repeated melodic phrases, atmospheric synthesisers and vocals performed in African languages. The genre spans soulful, melodic productions through to darker electronic forms sometimes classified as Afro Tech.

International labels, festivals and digital platforms widened the genre's audience through the 2010s and 2020s. Afro House is now produced across Africa, Europe and beyond, while South Africa keeps a central place in its history and development.

At Scientific Sound Asia, afro house is a defining feature of Roots, with further appearances on Electronic Roots and Esta La Musica.
