Bicycle Corporation has announced the playlist for their Roots Episode 163. Scientific Sound Asia, an electronic music station, DJ agency and promoter based in Asia, continues to showcase outstanding underground talent from across the region and around the world.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian duo formed by DJ and producer Marco Mei and his long-time creative partner Stefano Ugliano, also known by his moniker 6884. Marco began his musical journey in the early nineties, launching his career as both a DJ and producer while organising events under the collective Urban People, which toured extensively throughout Italy.
His work quickly drew attention, earning him a prestigious residency at Pacha Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. The success of his residency opened doors to bookings across the globe, establishing Marco as an internationally recognised artist and setting him on a path that would take him to clubs and festivals worldwide, performing alongside established names in the electronic music scene.
Stefano, originally from Turin, demonstrated musical talent from a young age. His early years were filled with classical piano, percussion and drumming, and his appreciation for both Chopin and West African djembe shaped his diverse musical foundation.
As he grew older, the pull of electronic music became irresistible. With the genre largely absent from Italian radio in the nineties, Stefano immersed himself in production, developing his sound with determination and passion. His meeting with Marco marked the beginning of Bicycle Corporation and a strong creative collaboration that continues to evolve today.
Recently, several of their earlier releases reached the end of their original label contracts, prompting the duo to establish a Bandcamp page to re-release and distribute their catalogue independently.
The journey begins with a strong Afro and Disco focus as Epuguzu sets a vivid opening full of Afro-Cuban and Afrobeat colour. El Fen follows with a blend of folk and disco influences before Aeo Part. 1 & 2 introduce an Italo-Disco and synth-driven feel that eases the tempo without losing momentum. Stebeniest and At The Dawn deepen the African and Nu Disco connection, giving this first section a warm, global character that already points to the breadth of Roots 163.
The mix moves naturally into Brazilian and Latin tones through a trio of Airto Moreira cuts, with Parana', Toque De Cuica and Celebration Suite anchoring the middle of the set in Latin jazz, fusion and samba. Batucada keeps that percussive spirit alive in a Disco and Nu Disco frame, while Atlas4088 adds a more modern, leftfield club edge. The flow then returns to song-focused material via Flecha De Fogo and Aruanda, where Latin folk and bossa vocals bring a softer, more reflective mood.
Disco and Afro influences rise again as Ahoë (Mangous Yé) and Supafrico deliver classic dancefloor swing with clear African roots. Funk Makossa and Sodade continue to balance groove and depth, weaving Afrobeat and Afro-Cuban emotion into the sequence. Jungle Fever in the Gay Marvine edit pushes things back towards club territory, while Sombrero and Hamathil serve up modern Nu Disco and edit-driven ideas that keep the set feeling current and playful.
The closing stretch leans into soul, funk and Brazilian-inspired material. You Got The Stuff brings Bill Withers’ unmistakable funk and disco sensibility, before Achilipú and Amor En Jacuma link flamenco, rumba, batucada and Latin jazz. Jibaro and Anik Ana highlight disco funk and Afro funk influences, leading into a run of MPB and Latin Disco from Emoriô, Fela, Maracatú Atômico and Agosto Damor. Roots 163 ends as a rich, coherent tour of Afro, Latin and Disco heritage, shaped by Bicycle Corporation’s ear for both timeless cuts and thoughtful reworks.
