Bicycle Corporation has released the playlist for episode 149 of their show Roots, aired on Scientific Sound Asia. The station is an Asian-based electronic music platform, DJ agency, and promoter that connects listeners across the region and beyond.
The duo behind Bicycle Corporation is Italian DJ and producer Marco Mei and accomplished musician Stefano Ugliano, who also produces under the alias 6884. Marco began his career in the early 1990s, launching his own events under the name Urban People across Italy.
These parties helped him build a strong reputation, eventually earning him a residency at Pacha in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. Following his success at Pacha, Marco’s international bookings grew, and he began performing at venues across the globe. These gigs marked the start of his worldwide journey, sharing lineups with some of the most respected names in electronic music.
Stefano, based in Torino, showed musical promise from an early age. He immersed himself in the study of classical piano, percussion, and drums, developing a particular admiration for composers like Chopin and rhythmic traditions such as West African Djembe. His growing interest in electronic music, which had limited exposure on Italian radio at the time, became a driving force in his evolution as a producer.
As Stefano’s passion for electronic sounds deepened, his path crossed with Marco’s, and Bicycle Corporation was born. Their collaboration brought together two unique musical backgrounds with a shared vision.
Recently, some of their earlier works became available again following the expiration of label contracts, and they have launched a Bandcamp page to make this material accessible to fans. Roots episode 149 continues their exploration of diverse musical influences and showcases their deep commitment to the foundations of dance music culture.
Episode 149 of Bicycle Corporation's Roots opens with Ju Ju Man by Passport, a quintessential slice of Jazz Fusion from the German pioneers, before diving into Miroslav Vitous’ New York City, which blends avant-garde jazz with electric experimentation from the early Arista catalogue. Ramsey Lewis' Sun Goddess follows with its timeless Soul Jazz groove, a track that helped define the genre in the '70s.
Mid-show, Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin's Before It's Too Late and La Batterie's Let There Be Drums demonstrate the intersection of A.O.R., Funk, and electronic-infused percussion. Fantasy by Johnny Hammond flows seamlessly into Donald Byrd’s You And The Music, both showcasing the lush, orchestrated textures of the Kudu and Blue Note sounds. These are followed by Crosby, Stills & Nash’s Dark Star, lending a crossover into folk-rock and psychedelic territory.
The journey continues with Hip Pockets by Billy Cobham & George Duke and Alekasam by Chico Hamilton, offering complex rhythms and virtuosic jazz interplay. Booker T. & The M.G.'s funk-driven Melting Pot paves the way for classics like Chameleon by Herbie Hancock and Expansions by Lonnie Liston Smith, key tracks that helped elevate Jazz Funk into the mainstream.
Rounding out the episode are standout cuts like Ain’t No Sunshine by Roy Ayers, Santana’s serene Aqua Marine, and Street Life by The Crusaders. The set closes with deep cuts from Weather Report, Walter Wanderley, Tom Scott, Pat Metheny, and Maynard Ferguson, making this an essential listen for fans of jazz fusion, soul, and timeless grooves.
