Ezmun presents Cooking With Gas 17 on Scientific Sound Asia, an episode centred on the meeting point between four-to-the-floor and half-time techno. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Cooking With Gas is Ezmun's weekly programme of percussive, groove-led and dark selections. Episode 17 explores the overlap between four-to-the-floor techno and half-time techno.
Ezmun is from Cumbria in the United Kingdom and relocated to Vietnam to pursue his ambitions as a DJ and producer. The pandemic temporarily took him to Melbourne, from where he planned to release a weekly show featuring his preferred sounds.
Like many DJs, Ezmun began in his bedroom before playing house parties for close friends and cohorts. By 2019, he had made his club debut at venues in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City.
Drawn to the sparse atmosphere of minimal half-time 140s and the forceful clatter of percussive leftfield bass, he uses both as peaks and troughs within an energetic techno setting. He was gaining recognition in Vietnam's underground scene and hoped to return there.
In the meantime, he planned to explore the Melbourne underground scene while developing his production skills with the intention of releasing his own music the following year. Cooking With Gas also gave him space to showcase friends and lesser-known DJs while examining the genres he enjoys in greater detail.
Ezmun's Cooking With Gas 17 episode opens with Ackermann, Vinicius Honorio and Raphael Dincsoy's Gangster on Liberta Records, followed by Mollono.Bass's Der Vagabund on Ostwind Records. Lag's Varijacije on Mord establishes the set's Peak Time Techno focus before Vinicius Honorio's Hideous (Raphael Dincsoy Reinterpretation) extends the opening sequence.
HD Substance's Aphelion on Hxagrm Records and Mark Rogan's Advanced Human remix of Fight Or Flight on Unknown Territory keep the pressure high. MasCon's Nebel, released through Hxagrm Records, introduces a direct strain of Techno before Kimono's Blaze Blaze on KMNO Records returns to the central pace.
Callum Plant's I Guess U Know on Liberta Records and Amby Iguous's Yellow on Hxagrm Records sustain the tense four-to-the-floor motion. Lag's Kontrola on Mord and Girls Revenge's Lipstick++Ransom on Rodz-Konez make the middle section more forceful without breaking its percussive character.
Bas Mooy's Dormir on Mord brings in raw, deep and hypnotic techno, before Museum's Slope, also on Mord, restores the peak-time emphasis. Mslwte's Suspected Sprain on CME then introduces Electro textures ahead of Ansome's Tony on Mord.
Lag returns with Voidloss's Return To Occult Remix of Applied Mechanics on Singularity Recordings, bringing the set back towards its tougher rhythmic core. SHXCXCHCXSH's VVOV on Mord and Callum Plant's Just Can't Help Me on Liberta Records carry that intensity forward, while Sixth's Diabla Diezco provides a later contrast.
Heron's Stoned Funk on Unknown Territory returns to the deeper, hypnotic edge heard earlier in the programme. Mslwte's Marauder On The Prowl on Singularity Recordings, Voidloss's The Union Of Opposites on Hxagrm Records and Dast (Italy)'s Skulkyoe on Souvenir Music bring the selection to a focused techno finish.
