Putting The Science Into Music

Acid techno emerged in London during the early 1990s, combining the forceful rhythms of techno with the resonant bass sound of the Roland TB-303. Its development was closely tied to underground warehouse events, free parties and the city's squat-party network.

Chris, Aaron and Julian Liberator became central figures in the scene as DJs, producers and organisers. Their label Stay Up Forever, founded in 1993, gave a home to a faster and more abrasive form of acid music, distinct from earlier Chicago acid house.

Producers regularly pushed the TB-303 through distortion and effects units, creating sharper, more aggressive basslines over rapid four-to-the-floor percussion. Drum machines including the Roland TR-909 became central to the style too, contributing hard kicks, metallic hi-hats and a direct rhythmic structure.

Labels such as Stay Up Forever, Smitten, Routemaster and Cluster helped push acid techno beyond London. Records moved through independent shops, specialist distributors and international DJ networks, connecting the British scene to audiences across Europe and further afield.

Acid techno went on to influence hard techno, acidcore, freetekno and several other underground rave styles. It's still recognised by its distorted TB-303 sequences, high-energy tempos and close ties to independent labels, unconventional venues and DIY event culture.
