Ezmun presents Cooking With Gas Episode 01 on Scientific Sound Asia, having started a new weekly show, Cooking With Gas. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter, DJ agency and music-news platform connecting audiences across the region and internationally.
Cooking With Gas is Ezmun’s weekly dose of percussive, groovy and dark music. This two-hour mix moves through tech house, leftfield bass and techno, exploring the territory in between.
Ezmun is originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom, and had relocated to Vietnam to pursue his ambitions as a DJ and producer. At the time of publication, COVID had forced him to relocate temporarily to Melbourne, from where he released a weekly show centred on his favourite sounds.
Like many DJs, Ezmun started in his bedroom, which led to house parties involving close friends and cohorts. By 2019, he had made his breakthrough into clubs, playing venues in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City.
Enamoured with the dark, sparse atmosphere of minimal half-time 140s and the lairy clatter of percussive leftfield bass, he uses them as peaks and troughs within an energetic techno setting. Although Ezmun is still honing his art, his move from playing for friends to local venue stages had gained attention within Vietnam’s underground scene.
Ezmun’s Cooking With Gas Episode 01 opens with Lurka’s Stay Let’s Together on Wisdom Teeth, bringing clipped Breaks rhythms into Soulwax’s Is It Always Binary on Play It Again Sam. Randomer and Hodge’s Simple As on Livity Sound Recordings adds bass-and-club pressure, while Yak’s Fret on Phonica Recordings introduces Deep House textures.
Soulwax’s opening selection supplies an Indie Dance edge before Louie Cut’s Deboche on Strict Recordings pares the arrangement back to minimal club detail. TOYC’s Shuffle on Greenmoney brings in House Music, then Silas & Snare’s Pressure on Kaizen returns to sharp break-led percussion.
Fox’s Big Man Ting, produced by Famous Eno, introduces grime vocals and bashment energy, while Ikonika’s Position on Hyperdub brings Electronica into the sequence. Sudanim’s Midrift on Her Records (2) and Santa Muerte and Kala’s Imaabs remix of Tak deepen the off-centre club focus before Boys Noize’s Distort Me on Boysnoize Records hardens the tone.
Walton’s Black Hole/da Recor - Kit Kitchã leads into Mark Pritchard’s 1234, featuring Ragga Twins, on Warp Records, where Drum and Bass momentum enters the mix. Goncalo M’s The Evil Within on Intuition Recordings PT follows with Peak Time Techno force, before Lokane’s Body Double and Tsvi remix on Nervous Horizon return to bass-heavy club pressure.
Lady Lykez and Lioness’s Muhammad Ali Remix, produced by Scratchclart and released on Hyperdub, brings Hip Hop into the later stretch. Dan Habarnam’s Deapmash remix of Mut Mobile on Origami Sound and Lag’s DHC3 on Mord tighten the pace before Blawan’s Calcium Red on Ternesc introduces raw, deep and hypnotic techno.
MM’s Terrible Muscle on Even the Strong breaks up Rebekah’s Enigma on Soma Records, with the latter reinforcing the deeper techno tension. Tsvi and Tzusing’s 24hr on Nervous Horizon, Pinch and Mumdance’s Strobe Light on Tectonic, and Epoch’s Fleahunt close the episode with urgent percussion and eerie spaciousness.
