Marco Mei presents episode 9 of his 2021 radio show on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, music-news platform and promoter connecting electronic-music audiences across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
With over thirty years behind him as a DJ and producer, Marco Mei has built a career that stretches from the early Italian club scene to venues and festivals across four continents. His musical foundations in afrobeat, funk and early synthesised music have never strayed far from his selections, regardless of how far his circuit has expanded.
The international phase of his career took shape through a residency at Pacha Club in Sharm-El-Sheikh, which opened doors to a wider touring schedule. Clubs including Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk followed, with artists including Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void among those he has shared the booth with.
In 2009 he launched Bicycle Corporation alongside Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, a project that landed with 17:44 Records and quickly accumulated releases on Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox. The catalogue now runs to over fifty tracks and remixes across deep house, tech house, French house and techno, with backing from Dubfire, Axwell, Danny Tenaglia, Mauro Picotto and Above and Beyond.
Taipei has been his home base for a number of years, and his Ciao Taipei party has been a consistent fixture in the city's underground since 2013, broadening his connections across South East Asia in the process. Marco Mei's show from 27th February 2021 opens with Nez and ScHoolboy Q's Wild Youngster in the Jamie Jones Remix, before Paranoid London's Eating Glue brings Electronica from Paranoid London Records. Paolo Martini's Electric Soul on La Luna Records establishes the Tech House direction, while Felix Leiter and Ben Rainey's Good Times on Music Factory adds House Music to the early sequence.
Andre Le Phunk and Maiya Sykes's Back To My Love in the KPD Remix supplies the set's first Soulful House moment before Maxinne and MOYA's In The Groove on Toolroom Trax introduces the tracklist's DJ tools and acapellas entry. Moreno Pezzolato's Bring Me Up on There Was Jack brings Funky House into play, before Sllash and Doppe's Pepper Shaker on Boom Boom Room and Dennis Beutler and Kuestenklatsch's The Way on Hood Politics Records tighten the Tech House run.
Katiahshe and Jacob Colon's Don't Stop, with Oscar G's saxophone, adds a Jackin House flavour before Ministers De La Funk and Jocelyn Brown's Believe in the Madd Gee and DJ Antonio Afro House Remix makes its second appearance across the Marco Mei series in consecutive weeks. Jansons's Heartbreaker on Revival New York then leads into DJ W!LD's Take A Trip in Radio Slave's Gotta Get Up Remix on The W Label, a Deep Tech House turn followed by Deetron's House selection Dr. Melonball on Nu Groove.
Obskur's Bayside in the 10 Years Of Eats Everything Extended Remix on FFRR and Nicole Moudaber and Eats Everything's Big Dipper on MOOD form a direct Tech House pairing. Makeup's Koke in the Nico Lahs Edit introduces Disco, while Seth Troxler and The Martinez Brothers's Play In The Dark on Crosstown Rebels and Tumblack's Caraiba in the Felipe Gordon Edit bring House, Afro House and Deep House warmth to the middle of the programme.
Walterino and Jamie Lewis's Cosmic Funk in The Dukes Main Mix on Purple Disco Records shifts the mood towards Nu-Disco and Balearic territory. Freitobar's Island in the Sun and Rockets's Galactica in the Ladies On Mars Remix sustain the lighter, melodic passage before Filta Freqz's Masta Blasta in the Gettoblaster Remix on Seventy Four returns to Tech House.
James Curd and Gettoblaster's Keep It High on Circus Recordings follows the Filta Freqz track, placing Gettoblaster in back-to-back positions during the final stretch. Soul Avengerz featuring Krysten Cummings's Respect in the Wayne Soul Avengerz and Odyssey Inc. Remix closes the episode on a Soulful House note, giving the programme a dancefloor-focused finish after its movement through Tech House, House, Disco and Nu-Disco.
