The Funk Sessions have submitted the playlists for their first show on Scientific Sound Asia, featuring Yushka and Robson Jr. The platform operates as an underground electronic music radio station for the Asian region and international audiences, alongside its work as a DJ agency, promoter and music news outlet.
Since 2019, The Funk Sessions crew have been bringing funk-focused party energy to dancefloors across Saigon. Their sound moves through Funk classics, Old Skool Hip Hop, Disco, Party Breaks, Ghetto Funk and other groove-heavy styles.
The collective brings together international DJs from Australia and the United Kingdom, with members based mainly in Vietnam. Their background spans club nights, free parties and festivals, alongside support slots for recognised names from the underground music circuit.
The pioneers of Breakbeat strongly influence their musical identity. That influence is clear in their Hip Hop, Funky Breaks and Ghetto Funk selections, while also running through the wider structure of their mixes.
The Funk Sessions have held regular events in Ho Chi Minh City at Broma Not A Bar, TNR, Indika and Apt852. Past and present venues also include Secret Weekend, Tempo, Arcan, Haus, Banana Mama, Piu Piu, Sky 9, Rogue Saigon, Soma and Saigon Outcast.
The Funk Sessions episode 1 features Robson Jr. in the first hour and Yushka in the second hour, with a selection built around Funk, Breakbeat, Ghetto Funk, Latin rhythm and Soul. Robson Jr. opens with Odjbox’s Golden, using a self-released cut built from hip hop, funk and broken-beat sources.
Palov and Mishkin’s Block Rock with BNC moves the opening section into Breakbeat, supported by its Cast-A-Blast context across Latin, Funk, Hip Hop and Breaks. DJ Neber’s The Latin Mouse and Panama Cardoon’s Moliendo Cafe then bring Latin and Afrobeat colour into the first-hour structure.
Gypsy Hill and Besh O Drom’s Balaka introduces Balkan Beats through Batov Records and the wider Balkan, Mediterranean and folk-dance context around both acts. Andy Taylor’s Bank Of Panama then returns to Breakbeat before The Karminsky Experience adds a lounge-funk entry with Exploration.
Oumou Sangaré’s Ah Ndiya appears in the K&F edit, bringing West African source material into a dancefloor edit context. Calypso Rose’s No Madame in the Polo and Pan remix then shifts towards Caribbean and tropical rhythm, giving the hour a broader global funk shape.
Nese Karabocek’s Yali Yali in the Todd Terje edit and Javi P3z Orquesta’s El Safari keep the middle section rooted in Funk, Latin rhythm and edited club material. Bibi Tanga and The Selenites then add Be Africa, connecting modern funk production with Afrobeat and soul influence.
Panama Cardoon returns with Lameirao, keeping the Latin and Afrobeat thread active before Hiphoppapotamus introduces Funky Breaks with Tropical Wiseguy. Sunlightsquare and Josue Ferreira then bring Taj Mahal into the sequence, adding Brazilian and Latin flavour through Sunlightsquare’s funk and soul-oriented catalogue.
The Chemical Brothers’ The Salmon Dance brings a Big Beat reference into the late first hour, using comic vocal phrasing and break-driven production. Lena Horne’s I Want A Little Doggie and Telephunken’s Feeling Good then move into Electro Swing, connecting vintage vocal sources with electronic rhythm.
Breakbeat Junkie’s Can’t Take It With You and Captain Funk’s Twist And Shout in the Krafty Kuts mix close the first-hour peak with breakbeat pressure. Buena Vista Social Club’s Chan Chan in the DJ Twister remix ends Robson Jr.’s hour with a Cuban source reshaped for the edit and breaks circuit.
Yushka opens the second hour with the Pointer Sisters’ Don’t Try To Take The Fifth in the Uncle Ted edit, returning the show to Funk. Dusty Springfield’s Spooky in the Jayl Funk edit then moves into Ghetto Funk, rebuilding a familiar vocal record with a heavier breaks-led rhythm.
Chairmen Of The Board’s Working On A Building Of Love in the Uncle Ted edit brings Soul into the second-hour structure before Featurecast’s Funky White Brother restores the Breakbeat line. Fdel’s Rocksteady follows with Funk and Breaks influence, supported by the wider Audiofdelity context around Breaks, Funk and Big Beat.
Sam and Dave’s Soul Man in the DJ Twister remix keeps the set connected to Soul while giving the source material a dancefloor edit format. Rufus Thomas’ Itch & Scratch in the Funk Ferret edit then pushes the hour back towards Ghetto Funk through the Ghetto Funk label connection.
Ella Fitzgerald’s Sunshine Of My Love in the Cee-Roo remix and Aretha Franklin’s Chain Of Fools in the RocknRolla Soundsystem edit bring Electro Swing and Soul into the middle of Yushka’s hour. These selections use classic vocal material as the source for club-oriented edits, linking vintage songcraft with modern break structures.
Fdel’s Ladies & Gentlemen, Flow Dynamics’ Live In The Mix and Soopasoul’s Hot & Cold build a strong Funk centre in the second hour. Freestyle Records describes Flow Dynamics’ track as electro-funk, while Soopasoul’s Jalapeno catalogue sits close to funk, jazz and soul.
Uncle Louis’ I Like Funky Music in the Badboe remix and Shimi Sonic’s Move Over keep the late section lively and groove-led. Toy Beats’ Rollercoaster and Restless Leg Syndrome’s Rhythm To The Brain then return to Breakbeat, adding a heavier rhythm before the final run.
Funk You Very Much’s Rock Steady Jointz brings another Ghetto Funk entry before Traks’ Long Train Running in the 9:15 To Nowhere remix returns to Funk. Chris Awesome’s Payback, Jimi Hendrix’s All Along The Watchtower in the Gary Shepherd remix and Beastie Boys’ Body Movin’ in the Fatboy Slim remix close the episode with Breakbeat, Funk and Big Beat force.
