Ezmun announced the tracklist for Cooking With Gas 15, a two-hour leftfield bass edition on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Cooking With Gas is Ezmun's weekly outlet for percussive, groovy and dark music. Episode 15 is a full two hours of leftfield bass and takes a darker direction than the preceding episode.
Ezmun is originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom and had recently relocated to Vietnam to pursue his ambitions as a DJ and producer. Covid-19 then forced a temporary move to Melbourne, where he planned to release a weekly show centred on his favourite sounds.
Like many DJs, Ezmun began in his bedroom before playing house parties with close friends and cohorts. In 2019, he made his club breakthrough with appearances in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City.
He draws on the sparse atmosphere of minimal half-time 140s and the forceful clatter of percussive leftfield bass, using them as peaks and troughs within an energetic techno setting. At the time, he was building a profile in Vietnam's underground and hoped to return there.
In Melbourne, he planned to explore the Melbourne underground scene while honing his production skills ahead of releasing his own music the following year. Cooking With Gas also gave him space to showcase friends and lesser-known DJs alongside the genres he enjoys.
Ezmun's Cooking With Gas 15 leftfield bass episode opens with Vespero's Natural/Electronic.System on DSR, bringing in House Music before the programme turns towards heavier rhythm. Santa Muerte and El Blanco Nino's Pal Piso on MAJÍA, Da Soul Boys' Dark Planet and TSVI's The Healer, both from Nervous Horizon, establish the Bass / Club focus.
Luru's Grunge Things on Nervous Horizon brings Peak Time Techno into the sequence. Yak's Zephyr on Le Chatroom, Lokane's In The Trap on Nervous Horizon and Pluralist's Bussboy on Manuka return to the bass-led club pressure.
Walton's Black Hole on Kaizen and Batu's Shiratani on Timedance keep the centre of the set taut and percussive. Ido Plumes' Which Way Is Up on Livity Sound Recordings introduces Breaks without losing the episode's darker character.
RzR and Wallwork's Parrot Honey on Nervous Horizon restores the bass-and-club emphasis before Hypho and Squane's Hekno on Jelly Bean Farm adds Electronica detail. Brackles' Skank featuring Fox, released through Swing Ting, then brings in UK Garage.
Walton's Point Blank on Tectonic takes the programme back to Bass / Club territory, while Peverelist's Salt Water on Livity Sound Recordings returns to Peak Time Techno. Yak's Fret on Phonica Recordings supplies a brief Deep House change of pace before DJ JM and TSVI's Xus Lord on Nervous Horizon tightens the rhythmic focus again.
