Scientific Sound Asia presents a new edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. Remaining aligned with the station’s commitment to underground culture, the series continues to explore house music shaped by soul, groove and emotional depth, connecting artists and listeners across Asia and beyond.

Based in Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been immersed in electronic music culture since the 1990s. His long-standing relationship with vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital formats reflects decades of dedication to underground sound and DJ culture, built through countless hours of listening, collecting and performing.

Although his musical journey has passed through techno, drum and bass and chillout, house music has always remained at the core of his artistic identity. During quieter periods for Portugal’s underground scene, Joshua played an active role in keeping it alive, organising events and working closely with fellow DJs and producers to sustain creative momentum within the community.

After stepping away from music to focus on family life, he returned with renewed focus by launching Floating Beats, a series recognised for its melodic and forward-looking direction. Velvety Elements followed as a complementary project, dedicated to deeper, warmer and more soulful expressions of house music.

Working under several aliases including K Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand and Joshua Onairam, he continues to explore multiple creative perspectives. Each identity reflects a distinct facet of his sound, ranging from rhythm-led minimalism to emotionally driven melodic expression.

In 2024, Joshua founded JFLM Recordings, a label created to release his own productions while supporting underground artists committed to authenticity and musical depth. The label has since become a key platform for his evolving studio output and collaborative work.

Under the Joshua Marian name, the 2024 Nobody Waiting For Me EP on Back to the Beat delivered an organ-led title track alongside the nostalgic tones of I Love You, both rooted firmly in classic house traditions. Follow-up releases such as Just Love and Chance With Soul expanded this palette further, blending groove with subtle emotional nuance.

In 2025, his K Joshua single Light of Faith introduced a more introspective approach, pairing deep house rhythms with melodic phrasing that balances reflection and forward motion. Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to articulate the essence of his musical vision, with each episode unfolding as a warm, flowing journey that honours the enduring soul of house music.

The episode opens with a refined Deep House mood as I’m Not a New Kid establishes a smooth, spacious groove before the darker swing of In My Life pulls the sound towards Minimal Deep Tech. Radio FM and Zang Tum Tumb then shift the mix into uplifting House territory, carrying warmth, funk and rolling momentum without losing the underground edge.

New York Feelings keeps the room moving with classic US-inspired bounce, while Understand This Groove deepens the retro feel with unmistakable Classic House spirit. The atmosphere then tightens as All Rize introduces a sharper Tech House bite, adding tension and late-night drive.

The middle section leans further into Minimal Deep Tech through the hypnotic loops of Banger 1 and Lady, creating a stripped-back, club-focused pulse that contrasts neatly with the earlier warmth. This segues smoothly back into lush Deep House with Need To Forget, restoring melody and depth.

The closing stretch centres firmly on Deep House soul. Ring For More brings rich chords and emotional flow, followed by Style, which balances groove and atmosphere to close the journey. Across two hours, Velvety Elements 300 moves seamlessly from classic-influenced House to deeper, more minimal textures, showcasing DJ Joshua’s signature balance of warmth, precision and dancefloor focus.

Catch his live radio show on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). If you can’t make it, don’t worry, there’s a replay on Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. (ICT).
