DJ Andrew M presents his all-vinyl Disco Show episode 04 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian and international electronic music radio station, promoter, DJ agency and music-news platform.
Andrew began his career hosting Hip Hop radio shows across Australia during the 1980s and 1990s, alongside several club residencies in the country. At the time of publication, he was also playing private parties and events, as well as clubs and bars in Singapore.
Following events in the United States, Canada and Europe, he had returned to private engagements in India, Dubai and Johannesburg. Between those bookings, he spent time searching through records and selecting music for vinyl gigs.
His musical interests are rooted in funk and Hip Hop, supported by decades of DJ experience and a broad knowledge of recorded music. His collection spans digital and physical formats, including vinyl, and encompasses a range of musical styles.
He had also played venues and private functions in Sydney, London and Amsterdam, including Mobile Mondays NYC earlier in 2019. Other private events had taken him to New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston and Toronto, while he also played in Singapore when opportunities arose.
Across the preceding decade, Andrew had appeared at clubs and events including Tanjong Beach Club, Kult, CAD, Artemis, Loof, Zouk, Tippling Club, Choice Cuts and Great Escape. His regional engagements also included dates in Indonesia and Thailand.
His sets focus on Disco music, ranging from contemporary records to established classics. This edition favours the 12-inch single and its complete extended versions rather than shortened selections for a social gathering.
DJ Andrew M opens Disco 04 with Central Line’s “Walking Into Sunshine” in Larry Levan’s original 12-inch mix, placing the programme firmly inside the early-eighties crossover between Funk, soul and club-oriented disco. Positive Force follows with “We Got The Funk” before King Tim III brings Hip Hop into the set through the rap and roller-disco crossover of “Charley Says! (Roller Boogie Baby).”
Sharon Brown’s “Specialize In Love” returns the programme to vocal dance music before Brooklyn Express and Freeez carry the selection towards post-disco, electro-funk and boogie. “I.O.U.” belongs to the original early-eighties electronic funk period rather than a later house interpretation, making it part of the developing machine-driven dance sound heard across this section.
Instant Funk then supply one of the set’s strongest Disco and funk records with “I Got My Mind Made Up,” a major 1979 Salsoul recording. Dynasty’s “Your Piece Of The Rock” and Life’s “I’m Caught Up” continue through boogie, soul and disco before First Choice provide another major Salsoul-era record.
“Let No Man Put Asunder” appears in Shep Pettibone’s mix, retaining the track’s original disco, funk and soul identity rather than turning it into a modern house record. Candido follows with “Dancin’ And Prancin’,” keeping percussion-heavy disco at the centre of the closing portion.
The Universal Robot Band finish Disco 04 with “Freak With Me,” returning to the New York disco and boogie lineage associated with the group’s late-seventies output. Across the programme, Andrew M moves between disco and funk with early hip hop, soul and electro-funk adding important links to the changing dance music of the period.
