Coh-hul presents Play it Loud 07 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally through its Radio archive.
Coh-hul is a DJ and producer based in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as an artist on the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency roster. His first live appearance was at a New Year's Eve party in Northern Thailand in 2015, and he has pursued crowd-facing sets since then.
His sound is rooted in tech-house and tech-funk, informed by labels including Dirtybird, This Ain't Bristol, Relief, Snatch and Perfect Driver. He favours funky drum patterns, pounding bass lines and futuristic Sci-Fi melodies, with an approach shaped by reading the room and balancing heavier passages with space.
By 2020, Coh-hul had lived in Saigon for five years, where he hosts his own Tech-House nights. His work in the city included residencies and club nights built around that sound.
His best-known party was the monthly AfterDark event, co-hosted with Broma Not A Bar. He was also a DJ member of the DTOX party brand and was involved with WHAT? Events.
Across Ho Chi Minh City, he played at The Lighthouse, Saigon Soul Pool Party, Piu Piu, Upper Saigon, Hideout, Last Call, Indika, Saigon Outcast and Rogue. Outside the city, his appearances included The Mui Ne Music & Arts Festival and a New Year's Eve performance at The Rock Island Club on Phu Quoc Island.
His interest in Dirtybird took him to the Dirtybird Campout festival alone during the summer of 2017. While in the United States, he set up a renegade party at Venice Beach in Los Angeles and performed at Stacy's at Melrose in Phoenix, Arizona.
In the summer of 2018, he played Le Chapiteau in Marseille for a sold-out crowd, which he described as the best set of his career. During the two years before this episode, Coh-hul also invested in a studio and began a new musical mission centred on production and releases for established labels.
His preceding show focused on Ed Banger and French electro from the beginning of the millennium. Play it Loud 07 turns to Snatch! Records, combining the label's catalogue with Coh-hul's own selections.
Coh-hul's Play it Loud 07 episode opens with Manuel Darquart's Birds of Paradiso on childsplay, a measured Deep House introduction. Seph Martin follows with Panty on Mood Funk Records, bringing a warmer Funky House feel.
Carlo Caldareri and Drop 2 Jump's Got Soul on MONOSIDE establishes the programme's Tech House centre. Catz 'n Dogz and Claude VonStroke's Raggadagga on Dirtybird, Cloonee's Get Stupid on Uprise Music and Holt 88's Synchrony on House Of Hustle keep the percussion direct, while Freaks' Tweekers in the Walker & Royce Remix on Music For Freaks adds a rougher club touch.
Joeski and Hector Lavoe's Dia De Ayer on Sondos brings in House Music, before Maya Jane Coles' Sweet Luv on I/AM/ME returns to deeper territory. Tim Green's Mobara on TRYBESof introduces Organic House, and Joeski's Soy Latino on Maya Records leads into C.H.A.Y.'s Meugitions of Tym on BIRDFEED.
Ruben Mandolini's Also! in the Kevin Over Remix begins the Snatch! Records sequence, followed by Riva Starr's The Basement Shit. Michael Bibi's Got The Fire and Soul Speech's Morning Light, both on Snatch! Records, hold the set in a tight late-night groove.
Riva Starr's remix of Groove Armada's Superstylin' and Technasia's remix of Stanton Warriors and Twista's Pop Ya Cork bring further Snatch! Records material into the mix. Green Velvet and Riva Starr's False Claim and Darius Syrossian's Moon Buggy lead towards Lars Wickinger's Alien Landing, which supplies the programme's brief Peak Time Techno lift on Snatch! Records.
Green Velvet and Riva Starr return with Keep Pushin' (Harder), before Mark Broom's The Way and Riva Starr's Dune Buggy ease the closing stretch back into house-rooted material. Riva Starr's The Wickedest Sound on Brock Wild, Mark Broom and Riva Starr's Gotta Have You, Genghis Clan's Wait You Wanna and Riva Starr's Vuoi Fumar! give the final run a firm Snatch! Records focus.
