Putting The Science Into Music

Trance developed in Europe during the early 1990s from Techno, Acid House, New Beat and electronic music built around repetition. Early scenes in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Britain helped establish a melodic club sound based on sequenced synthesisers, steady rhythms and gradual increases in tension.

The genre commonly uses four-to-the-floor drums, rolling basslines, arpeggios and extended breakdowns followed by strong rhythmic returns. Repeated melodic phrases and layered harmonies create a hypnotic structure suited to long DJ sets and large dance floors.

Artists including Jam & Spoon, Paul van Dyk, Sven Väth, Cosmic Baby and Age of Love helped shape early European Trance. Labels such as Eye Q, Harthouse, MFS and Platipus supported music that moved between Techno, Progressive House and increasingly melodic forms of electronic dance music.

During the late 1990s and 2000s, Trance expanded through artists including Tiësto, Ferry Corsten, Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond and Paul Oakenfold. Uplifting Trance, Progressive Trance, Vocal Trance, Tech Trance and Hard Trance developed as separate branches with different levels of melody, speed and rhythmic force.

Trance later became a major international festival and club genre, though underground scenes kept deeper, more progressive interpretations alive. The category can include classic, progressive, uplifting, vocal, tech and harder forms, connected by repetition, melodic development and sustained rhythmic tension.
