Bicycle Corporation has revealed that legendary guest DJ Bert Bevans will feature in episode 34 of their 'Roots' show. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an electronic music station, DJ agency, and event management company catering to audiences in Asia and beyond internationally.
Bicycle Corporation represents an Italian DJ and producer duo comprising Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also recognised by his alias 6884. Renowned for their versatility, they have delivered music spanning multiple genres such as Deep House, Tech House, French House, and Techno.
In the early 1990s, Marco began his career by leading house music and techno events under the name Urban People. His commitment and skill gradually earned him recognition in the music industry, making him a popular artist throughout Italy. However, his aspirations extended beyond the country. Marco's international reputation grew, resulting in bookings worldwide, which represented a major milestone in his career path.
Hailing from Torino, Italy, Stefano showed a natural passion for music from a young age. He spent a significant portion of his free time nurturing his love for the musical world. Through formal education, he refined his abilities in classical piano, percussion, and drums. His musical tastes were broad, encompassing both Chopin's compositions and the beats of the West African Djembe, showcasing his varied musical interests.
Stefano held a deep appreciation for various music genres. However, his greatest passion was his intense devotion to Disc Jockeys and the music they crafted. In the nineties, during his teenage years, Stefano was especially drawn to the rhythmic beats played by DJs, which were notably rare on Italian radio stations.
Although performing music before a large audience may seem like an impossible dream to many, Stefano stayed committed to his goal. Driven by steadfast determination, tireless effort, and unbreakable dedication, he and Marco moved forward to create Bicycle Corporation.
Despite their recent successes, Marco and Stefan stay connected to their beginnings. They have revisited their early tracks, embarking on a nostalgic journey, and have created a Bandcamp page for distribution. Their Roots radio show features prominent DJs and producers from Asia's electronic music scene, underscoring their dedication to the region's dynamic musical environment.
Guest DJ Bert Bevans.
This week Bicycle Corporation have a guest DJ Bert Bevans, Bert Bevans is the British Honduras-born DJ who started out playing "Block Parties" in Hollis, New York followed by other legendary NYC clubs such as Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Xenon, Electric Circus, Bonds and the Playboy Club.
Bert's family immigrated to New York on July 27, 1969, and settled down in Jamaica, Queens and later moved to Hollis, Queens, where he lived during his teens. After school, he studied aviation, but he never finished his education, as he tells me himself: "If I had graduated, I would have had to go to Vietnam, so I left. I still love flying though!".
Bert explains that becoming a DJ was kind of a "Natural Progression". He started out doing "Block Parties" in Hollis and then things more or less just happened. He never planned to be a DJ, but when he worked in Melody's Record Shop, most of the NY DJs came there to get the latest releases. They liked him and would invite him to their clubs, and the rest is history!
In April of 1977, the most famous club of all time opened up its doors in New York, the club was of course Studio 54. It didn't take long before Bert played his first private party in the club and it definitely was not his last one in '54'. The Studio 54 DJ Richie Kaczor was sent down to St.Thomas in the Virgin Islands to open up a '54' there. After a few months he was hired to open up another '54' in Barcelona, Spain and when leaving St.Thomas Richie turned the residency of Studio 54 in the Virgin Islands over to Bert.
After 2 years in the Virgin Islands Bert was back in New York and soon he was given an offer by Steven Hatter of a residency at his club The Embassy in London, UK. This led to another residency at the other new London hot spot Xenon. He moved along in the London club scene, playing in Camden Palace, a club owned by Rusty Egan and Steve Strange [of Visage], where he DJ'ed along with Colin Favor and "Evil" Eddie Richards.
Bevans was travelling back and forth between London, New York and other cities all over the world for many years. But in 1991 he met his old friend Justin Berkmann who was building a new "Paradise Garage type sound system" in a new club in London, which was to open up in September, the club was no other than the Ministry of Sound.
Bert still travels extensively around the globe performing at various venues and nightspots. For the past few years, he has helped Santeri build “Seduction” in Phuket (Which by the way had the MOS and Hed Kandi tours) and just completed a deal with Café del Mar Ibiza, we welcomed him onboard our radio station, enjoy the show!
Bert Bevans begins this soulful journey with iconic classics like Diana Ross and The Supremes’ "Someday We'll Be Together (Frankie Knuckles Mix)" and Allison Limerick’s timeless "Where Love Lives (David Morales & Frankie Knuckles Mix)." These tracks set the tone for an episode rich in emotional depth and vibrant energy.
The mix seamlessly transitions into uplifting Gospel House anthems like DJ Spen’s "God's Got It" and Jasper St Company’s "Paradise," radiating positivity and spirituality. As the energy builds, Funky House gems like Seamus Haji’s "Boogie 2Nite (Dr. Packer Remix)" and ReTide’s "All I Want" add a modern groove, while Dennis Ferrer’s "Hey Hey (Riva Star Remix)" and Chus & Ceballos’ "All I Want (Morales Mix)" bring deep, tribal rhythms to the set.
With its mix of classic and contemporary sounds, this episode captures the essence of Soulful House, offering a masterful selection of tracks that bridge the past and the present. Bert Bevans' exceptional curation delivers a truly uplifting and memorable listening experience.
