Bicycle Corporation presents guest DJ Bert Bevans for his upcoming 'Roots' show. Scientific Sound Asia serves as the online Asian promoter, DJ agency, and electronic music station in the region, reaching out internationally.

Bicycle Corporation is composed of the DJ and Producer Marco Mei and the talented Stefano Ugliano also known as 6884. Together, they have produced more than 50 original tracks and remixes spanning various electronic music genres.

In the early nineties, Marco was starting on his musical journey as a DJ and producer. He began doing his own house music and techno events as a collective known as 'Urban People' throughout the whole of Italy.

Having achieved success in his native land, he secured a residency at the renowned nightclub chain Pacha. Subsequently, he made the move to Africa to commence his residency in South Sinai, Egypt, specifically in Sharm el Sheikh. His residency and his reputation for invigorating the nightlife scene led to international DJ bookings and propelled him into a worldwide musical journey.

Stefano, who grew up in Torino, Italy, showed a strong aptitude for music from a young age. He enthusiastically pursued studies in classical piano, percussion, and drums, developing a particular fondness for Chopin's compositions and the rhythmic beats of West African Djembes.

As Stefano navigated through his teenage years, one particular image captivated his attention like no other: the DJ standing on the stage, fully immersed in their performance. The allure of this figure grew stronger with each passing moment, drawing Stefano into a world of music and artistry that he had never experienced before.

He pondered whether those electronic beats, which were difficult to hear on Italian radio stations in the '90s, would mark the beginning of a new phase in his life, leading to the birth of Bicycle Corporation. Bicycle Corporation has put out a Hard Techno remix for Virus D.D.Ds' song Origination, which has been selected in the staff picks on Beatport; it's a delightful track.

Despite their current successes, Marco and Stefan stay connected to their roots. Lately, they have been reminiscing by revisiting some of their early tracks and have even established a Bandcamp page for sharing their music. Through their Roots radio show, they shine a spotlight on well-known DJs and producers in Asia's electronic music scene, demonstrating their dedication to the region's dynamic musical environment.

The Roots radio show showcases the influences that inspired their transition to electronic music. The genres commonly explored by both the guests and hosts of Bicycle Corporation include House, Funk, Brazilian Funk, Afrobeat, Rap, Reggae, Disco, Hip-Hop, Soul, Rare Groove, and various others.

Guest DJ Bert Bevans.

The guest for this week is Bert Bevans, a DJ originally from British Honduras who began his career by performing at "Block Parties" in Hollis, New York, before moving on to iconic clubs in NYC like Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Xenon, Electric Circus, Bonds, and the Playboy Club. His family relocated to New York on July 27th, 1969, settling in Jamaica, Queens, and later moving to Hollis, Queens, where he spent his teenage years.

Following his school hours, he pursued a study in aviation, yet he did not complete his education, confessing, "If I had completed my studies, I would have been obliged to serve in Vietnam, so I decided to leave. Nevertheless, my passion for flying remains strong." This led him to transition into becoming a DJ, which he considered a logical step. His DJ journey began with organizing block parties in Hollis, and from there, things unfolded naturally.

Despite never intending to pursue a career as a DJ, fate had other plans for him when he found himself working at Melody's Record Shop. Situated in the heart of New York, the shop became a hotspot for the city's most prominent DJs who frequented the store to get their hands on the latest releases.

His genuine passion for music and impeccable taste in tracks caught the attention of these DJs, leading them to invite him to their clubs. Little did he know that these chance encounters would pave the way for his unexpected journey into the world of DJing.

Studio 54, the most famous club of all time, opened its doors in New York in April 1977. Bert soon played his first private party at the club, marking the beginning of several more appearances at '54'.

The Studio 54 DJ Richie Kaczor was assigned to launch a '54' in St. Thomas, located in the Virgin Islands. Following this, he was recruited to inaugurate another '54' in Barcelona, Spain. Upon departing from St. Thomas, Richie entrusted the residency of Studio 54 in the Virgin Islands to his successor.

Following 2 years in the Virgin Islands, he returned to New York and promptly received an invitation from Steven Hatter for a residency at his club 'The Embassy' in London, UK. Subsequently, he secured another residency at the newly established London hotspot Xenon.

He seamlessly integrated into the London club scene, performing at Camden Palace, a venue co-owned by Rusty Egan and Steve Strange of Visage. Here is where he shared the DJ booth with Colin Favor and "Evil" Eddie Richards.

Bevans spent many years travelling between London, New York, and various cities worldwide. In 1991, he reconnected with his old friend Justin Berkmann, who was establishing a new nightspot in London with a sound system reminiscent of the "Paradise Garage." This new club, set to launch in September, was none other than the Ministry of Sound.

He continues to travel extensively for performances at different venues globally. In recent years, he has assisted Santeri in developing “Seduction” in Phuket and finalized a partnership with Café del Mar Ibiza. Moreover, he participated in the inauguration of the Ice and Spice Bar in Ho Chi Minh City before the pandemic.

His program was initially broadcast on Sunday, January 23rd, and you can tune in to his show via the Mixcloud player provided below.
