New Year’s Eve: Foundations Saigon with Japanese Guest DJ Marcy

This event took place at Dill Saigon and Nightcap Saigon, 40 Đặng Thị Nhu, Phường Nguyễn Thái Bình, Quận 1, Ho Chi Minh City 700000, from 9 PM on 31 December 2022 until 2 AM on 1 January 2023. Both venues have since closed, but the original location has been kept for archive accuracy.

Scientific Sound Asia presented a one-off New Year’s Eve edition of Foundations Saigon with special guest DJ Marcy flying in from Okinawa, Japan. Marcy had previously appeared on Scientific Sound Asia Radio, and this event brought him to Ho Chi Minh City for a two-floor celebration across Dill Saigon and Nightcap Saigon.

The first floor at Dill Saigon focused on Breaks, Hip Hop and Funk, with a drinks selection built around craft beer, local cans, cider and easy party service. Upstairs at Nightcap Saigon, the sound moved through House, Nu Disco, Disco and Melodic selections in a cocktail bar setting.

The event combined two new venues at the same location, giving guests different sounds across the building. The downstairs floor carried the rougher breakbeat, Hip Hop and Funk energy, while the upstairs room offered a smoother House and Disco-led New Year’s Eve atmosphere.

Drinks on the night included draft MixTape craft beer, craft beer cans, cider, Huda glasses, Carlsberg draft and Carlsberg bottles. Nightcap Saigon also served cocktails throughout the night, with a range of drinks chosen for the festive setting.

DJ Marcy, Okinawa, Japan

DJ Marcy is a respected DJ from Okinawa, Japan, with more than 25 years of performing experience at the time of this event. His style is diverse, moving across House, Nu Disco, Minimal and Techno while keeping the dance floor connected to his groove and atmosphere.

Marcy had previously featured on Scientific Sound Asia Radio before appearing at Foundations Saigon. His New Year’s Eve set brought a Japanese underground connection to the event and linked the radio platform with a live club setting in Ho Chi Minh City.

DJ Psycho-UK, London, UK

DJ Psycho-UK is an East London DJ whose background connects Hip Hop, Acid House, Hardcore, Jungle, Drum and Bass, House and multi-genre underground music culture. Growing up during the golden age of Hip Hop, Acid House, Hardcore and Techno, his musical foundations were shaped by artists including Public Enemy, KRS-One, Run-DMC, DJ Hype, Carl Cox, Mickey Finn, A Guy Called Gerald, Leftfield, Portishead and Massive Attack.

For Foundations Saigon, DJ Psycho-UK brought a broad selection shaped by UK soundsystem culture, Hip Hop roots and underground electronic music. His role connected the event with Scientific Sound Asia’s wider activity across radio, events and DJ bookings in Vietnam.

DJ vDub, Canada

DJ vDub started spinning in the underground Asian scene in Taiwan, originally focusing on Nu Breaks and Dancehall with touches of electro-grunge and fidget. Over time, his sound moved further towards electro-glitch and mash-up territory.

He has played alongside names including Jacked Beats, Atomic Hooligan, Aquasky and Hybrid. His eclectic style of dirty bass beats added another international angle to the New Year’s Eve line-up.
