Coh-hul presents Play It Loud 04, Scientific Sound Asia Radio Podcast 281, on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across China, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the rest of Asia and internationally.
Coh-hul is a well-known DJ and producer based in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as an artist on the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency. His first live show was at a New Year's Eve party in Northern Thailand in 2015, and he has since pursued opportunities to connect with crowds through music.
His sound is rooted in tech-house and tech-funk, informed by the Dirtybird, This Ain't Bristol, Relief, Snatch! and Perfect Driver labels. Funky drum patterns, forceful bass lines and futuristic science-fiction melodies are central to his selections.
His crowd reading shapes when he raises the intensity and when he gives the floor space to reset. At the time of publication, he had lived in Saigon for four years, hosted his own tech-house nights and created lively club atmospheres across the city.
Listeners may have encountered him through one of his residencies around the city. His best-known party was the monthly "AfterDark" event, co-hosted with Broma:Not A Bar, while he was also a DJ member of the "DTOX" party brand and involved with WHAT? Events.
His Ho Chi Minh City appearances included The Lighthouse, Saigon Soul Pool Party, Piu Piu, Upper Saigon, Hideout, Last Call, Indika, Saigon Outcast and Rogue. Beyond the city, he played the Mui Ne Music & Arts Festival and New Year's Eve at The Rock Island Club on Phu Quoc Island.
Because of his enthusiasm for Dirtybird, he attended the Dirtybird Campout festival alone during the summer of 2017. During that US visit, he set up a renegade party at Venice Beach in Los Angeles and performed at Stacy's at Melrose in Phoenix.
In the summer of 2018, he played Le Chapiteau in Marseille to a sold-out venue, a set he described as the best of his career. Over the previous year, he had invested in a studio and set out to focus on production and releases for established labels, building on his reputation as an emerging producer and DJ.
Play It Loud showcases tech-house and tech-funk, and the preceding programme had focused on the Box of Cats label. This edition turns to Desert Hearts, combining tracks from the label with several of Coh-hul's current favourites.
Coh-hul's Play It Loud 04 episode opens with Stema's The Never Heard on Mood Funk Records, bringing a funky-house-disco touch to the first selection. Nicky Genesis follows with the Bass House track Funky Soul on Night Bass Records, before Shaded's Mad Stacks on Hot Creations establishes the programme's tech-house focus.
The Sponges' Feelin' Alright, also from Night Bass Records, returns to Bass House before Claude VonStroke and Marc Houle's Fly Guy on DIRTYBIRD introduces Peak Time Techno. Green Velvet and Mihalis Safras bring Microwave on Relief into the sequence, followed by Javi Lopez's Help Us on the same label.
Cloonee's What Ya Want on Black Book Records keeps the tech-house pressure in place before MAP's Friend on Caribbean Islands supplies a Latin Music turn. Miguel Bastida and Joker 420's I Güana Get High on Be One Records then leads into Daft Punk's Burnin' on Daft Life Ltd./ADA France, a clear moment of House Music.
The Desert Hearts Records section begins with Cut Snake's Desire and FreedomB's Bassline Boy, both holding to the set's tech-house line. Andreas Henneberg's Little Piece of Me and Caal and Baum's Block Party follow on the label, keeping the emphasis on direct club rhythms.
More Than Friends brings Voodoo and Eskuche contributes It's Okay, with both Desert Hearts Records cuts extending the central run. Lubelski and Wyatt Marshall's Just Can't Stop gives way to Clyde P's Zangief, staying with the same label's functional late-set energy.
RYBO and Wyatt Marshall's Constellation 303 and Ekoboy's AI maintain the Desert Hearts Records thread before Kevin Knapp's Bleep Blop, in the Lubelski and Wyatt Marshall remix, adds another version from the label. Andreas Henneberg closes with Gettin' Freaky and Turbo, while Fritz Carlton and RYBO's Disconnect and David Herrero's Good Funk keep the final stretch firmly focused on Desert Hearts Records.
