Anonymous Z presents Not So Anonymous 7 with guest Anomaly on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an electronic music radio station, promoter, DJ agency and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
This edition of Not So Anonymous focuses on Middle Eastern sounds, with Anomaly appearing in the first hour. A passion for music from an early age took Anomaly through a range of genres and scenes.
During his school and university years in Lebanon, Roger, the man behind Anomaly, played drums in bands spanning Rock, 1990s Alternative and Jazz. His discovery of electronic music led him towards DJing at venues and clubs in Bahrain, Dubai and Lebanon.
The organic sounds, instrumental music and vocals he encountered in bands inform DJ sets that combine those elements with Deep House, House and Tech House. As part of his work in electronica, Anomaly previously started Jazz HouZe, a DJ and live act featuring other artists on saxophone, South Indian tabla and piano.
Anomaly describes his sets as genre-crossing and boundary-crossing, intended to reach people’s lives and emotions beyond dancing. His first hour supplies the guest section of this two-part programme.
Anonymous Z, who takes the second hour, is mostly famous in Saigon, Vietnam, for founding Mad Circus Epic parties. He also founded Glassroom, Bahrain’s first underground DJ community.
Leading a group of people from varied backgrounds, he organised parties and after-parties, legal or otherwise, that local nightlife remembers as legendary. His motto then was "They tried to bury us, but they forgot we were seeds".
After joining the Banana Hustle crew in its punchy tropical period, he helped develop its distinctive vibe. Originally a Techno head, he developed a taste for digging out Afro, House, Disco and Funk records.
He complements this with hand-picked Techno and recent Indie Dance selections. His strong abilities as a selecta opened doors to underground venues including Arcan, The Lighthouse, Broma and Vitamin D after-parties.
His non-linear sets are often improvised and guided by the dance floor, using tense and groovy basslines alongside epic melodic storytelling. They range across several styles while playing with emotional shifts.
Anonymous Z's Not So Anonymous show 7 with Anomaly begins with Matanza’s Existencia in the Acid Pauli Remix on Matanza Records, an Electronica opening with gentle percussion. YokoO’s Sacred Tears on All Day I Dream follows before Sonophone’s Planet Caravan on Sonophone Music adds another measured electronic texture.
El Mundo and Zazou’s Elfenberg Remix of Can You See What I See on Do Not Sit On The Furniture Recordings introduces Organic House rhythms. Heartbeast’s El Mundo Remix of Killer on Heartbeast Music and Modd, Amega and Hojj’s Telefade featuring Amega on Anjunadeep keep Anomaly’s hour melodic and percussion-led.
Elfenberg’s Jafar on Sol Selectas brings the guest set towards its Middle Eastern focus, followed by Sidartha Siliceo and Simon Vuarambon’s Liberation on Cosmic Awakenings. Darkside’s The Only Shrine I’ve Seen on Matador Records gives Anomaly’s hour its spacious final passage.
Anonymous Z starts the second half with Sander (FR) and Jugurtha’s Le Regard Du Loup on Cosmic Awakenings, then Cannibal Ink and Freudenthal’s Road To Annapurna on Nein Records. Wolfstream’s No Future on Sincopat turns towards Indie Dance without losing the programme’s shadowed character.
Ali Farahani and Marco Bonuso’s 2017 reinterpretation of Persian Dream on Sol Selectas leads into Mehmet Aslan’s Denizalti Ruzgarlari on Fortuna Records. Ko Shin Moon and Simple Symmetry’s Cornelius Doctor Lonley Mix of Halay on Ko Shin Moon Records brings an Acid edge to the sequence.
Zombies In Miami’s The Legends Of The Hidden Temple on Correspondant and Jugurtha’s Keybe Remix of Atbara on Cosmic Awakenings sustain the club-focused second hour. Elfenberg returns with the original version of Jafar on Sol Selectas before Acid Arab’s Stil, featuring Cem Yildiz on Crammed Discs, closes with distinctive Electro vocals and rhythm.
