Marco Mei presents episode 10 of his 2021 radio series on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, music news platform and events promoter covering electronic music across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
Marco Mei is an Italian DJ and producer whose three decades in the industry began in the early 1990s, when a grounding in afrobeat, funk and early electronic music drew him towards the decks. That breadth of influence has kept his selections from settling into one sound across a career that has taken him through clubs and festivals on several continents.
Early Italian dates led to a residency at Pacha Club in Sharm-El-Sheikh, a launchpad for the wider international circuit that followed. His Facebook page documents his activity, while his touring history includes Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk, alongside appearances with Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void.
Bicycle Corporation, his long-running studio collaboration with Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, grew from a shared house and techno sensibility when the pair joined forces in 2009. Picked up by 17:44 Records and subsequently released through Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox, the project has produced more than fifty tracks and remixes supported by Dubfire, Axwell, Danny Tenaglia, Mauro Picotto and Above and Beyond.
Ciao Taipei, the party he has run in the Taiwanese capital since 2013, has been central to his standing in the Southeast Asian underground and draws a network of artists and promoters to the city. Based in Taipei, he works across a wider Southeast Asian network, broadcasts weekly through the Scientific Sound Asia radio station and is available for bookings through the DJ agency.
Marco Mei's 6th March 2021 show opens with Deetron's Dr. Melonball on Nu Groove, followed by Jovonn's Random on the same label, pairing a classic House Music foundation with Deep House. Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella's Inner Light, featuring Raashan Ahmad, brings the Spiritual Jazz and Jazz Dance character of their album material into the sequence before MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal and Henrik Schwarz's Chagu on Defected introduces Afrobeat and Afro House weight through Jal's spoken-word presence.
Claudio Coccoluto Presents The Heartists follows with Belo Horizonti in the 20 Anos Rmx, a classic House reference that acknowledges the Italian DJ and producer's legacy. Ali Kuru and Ilhan Ersahin's Eplos on Crosstown Rebels brings in Electro beside the Jazz House quality noted in the original selection, while Alex Kennon and Pete Tong's Apache precedes Pablo Bozzi's Brigade Canine on EGONlab., with its Italo/New Beat character.
Loveface's Love Satisfaction on Loveface Music supplies a Disco lift before Tilman's Say Good Bye on Shall Not Fade returns to House Music. DJ Sneak's In Da Clouds on Strictly Rhythm Italy provides the Chicago House anchor, then DJ Kincaid's About The Music in Kenny Summit's One Two BBQ Mix revisits a track from the preceding week's show ahead of Rheinzand's Blind in the Gerd Janson Dance Remix.
Trans-X's 1983 Canadian Synthpop recording Living On Video appears in Claptone's Extended Remix on Unidisc Music, giving the pop edit a Nu-Disco treatment within the set. Supernova's Lovely Summer Dreams on Blackboard then returns to Deep House, while Llewellyn's Shimshit on Playrjc063 and Biesmans's Save The Night on Watergate Records establish an Indie Dance passage.
Alex Aguayo's Not Going Out on Higher Love Recordings restores a direct House Music pulse before Cristoph, Franky Wah and Artche's The World You See on Pryda Presents brings in Progressive House. DJ Alone Again's With Whom U Belong on Alone Again Records follows with another Electro entry, and Hotevilla's Feel Like Moving on KULTUR introduces Tech House.
Maxinne and Moya's In The Groove on Toolroom Trax makes its third appearance across consecutive Marco Mei shows, functioning here as a DJ Tools / Acapellas selection with a vocal-led role. The later stretch returns to the soulful direction of the programme through DJ Alone Again and Hotevilla before Biesmans's Melodic House and Techno reference and the Soulful House warmth heard in the set.
Sosa's Da House on Cuttin' Headz and Make A Dance's Real Pleasure provide the final club-focused run before Danny Tenaglia's Music Is The Answer in the Montel Club Mix closes the episode. Tenaglia's anthemic 1998 record gives the programme an apt final statement after its route through classic House, Deep House, Jazz-informed selections, Afrobeat, Electro, Disco, Indie Dance, Progressive House and Tech House.
