Ezmun presents Cooking With Gas 19 on Scientific Sound Asia, a programme built around percussive, dark and groove-led selections. Scientific Sound Asia is an electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Cooking With Gas, also known as CWG, is Ezmun's weekly exploration of percussive, groove-led and dark music. Episode 19 explores the space between half-time techno, leftfield bass and 4x4 techno.
Ezmun is originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom and had relocated to Vietnam to pursue his ambitions as a DJ and producer. At the time of publication, Covid-19 had forced a temporary move to Melbourne, from where he released a weekly show centred on his preferred sounds.
Like many DJs, Ezmun began in his bedroom before playing house parties with close friends and peers. By 2019, he had begun playing clubs in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City.
He draws on the sparse atmosphere of minimal half-time 140s and the forceful percussion of leftfield bass, using them as peaks and troughs within an energetic techno setting. His work had attracted attention in Vietnam's underground, and he hoped to return there.
While in Melbourne, he planned to explore the Melbourne underground scene and develop his production skills with the intention of releasing his own music the following year. Cooking With Gas also gave him space to showcase friends and undiscovered DJs while examining the genres he values in greater detail.
Cooking With Gas 19 opens with Tommy Four Seven's Radius in the Machine Woman remix, bringing raw, deep and hypnotic Techno into focus. Metrist's Qqraasi Qrassi on Timedance then introduces the bass and club approach that shapes the early selections.
Metrist returns with OL Face You Got, also from Timedance, before Girls Revenge's Lipstick++Ransom on Rodz-Konez raises the temperature through Peak Time Techno. Korzi's Out Overnight and Hypho's Gong Tau, both on eatmybeat, bring in sharply cut Breaks.
Oake's Telane returns the set to raw, deep and hypnotic techno before Minor Science's Underripe on Whities Records introduces Electronica. Dubrunner's Scorpio Season on Scuffed Recordings brings the bass and club pressure back into the sequence.
Diabla Diezco's Sixth on Mord follows with another raw, deep and hypnotic techno cut, while Rackz 282's DTRU on All Centre breaks up the pace. Croft's With Shadows of Ghosts on eatmybeat then returns to peak-time techno before Anz's Stepper on Hessle Audio adds further bass and club weight.
Hedchef's Semmelweis Reflex in the Korzi remix and Yakona's Terminal, both on eatmybeat, place successive peak-time techno tracks at the centre of the later section. Korzi's Chroma, also on eatmybeat, answers them with breaks and keeps the set's percussive character intact.
Ansome's Penny & Pound on Mord leads into Tessela's Nancy's Pantry on R&S Records, bringing a direct strain of Techno to the closing stretch. Callum Plant's Just Can't Help Me on Liberta Records, Tenebre's Jungle Frontier on WNCL Recordings and Lag's Kontrola on Mord finish the programme with peak-time techno intensity.
