Ezmun presented the final Cooking With Gas episode 20 on Scientific Sound Asia, with guest Esher joining him for the second hour. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Cooking With Gas, curated by Ezmun, was a weekly programme centred on percussive, groovy and dark selections. Episode 20 marked the end of the show’s Sunday 10 PM slot, and first aired on 20 September 2020.
The two-hour programme focused on drum and bass, with Ezmun taking the first hour and Esher the second. Ezmun is originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom and had relocated to Vietnam to pursue his ambitions as a DJ and producer.
Covid-19 temporarily took him to Melbourne, where he planned to release a weekly show featuring his preferred sounds. Like many DJs, he began in his bedroom before playing house parties with close friends and fellow music enthusiasts.
By 2019, he had begun playing clubs in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City. His sets brought the dark, sparse atmosphere of minimal half-time 140s and the lairy clatter of percussive leftfield bass into an energetic techno setting.
Ezmun was building a following in Vietnam’s underground scene and hoped to return there. While in Australia, he planned to explore the Melbourne underground scene and develop his production work ahead of releasing his own music the following year.
Cooking With Gas gave him space to feature friends and lesser-known DJs while examining the genres he enjoys. Esher comes from the northern reaches of Melbourne and has a rich history in music production, spanning trance, techno and dubstep.
Influenced by Mad Zach, Ivy Lab, Noisia and Imanu, he had several years of production experience behind him. Esher conveys a unique experience through expansive atmospheres, gritty bass lines and complex drum patterns, with his sights set on a first label release.
At the time of this announcement, Esher was due to take over the 10 PM slot, with further information promised in his first episode the following week. This final edition therefore paired Ezmun’s selection with a guest mix from an artist preparing to begin his own run on the station.
The first hour opens its Drum and Bass run with ReDraft and Kid Kun’s Moon on Tenfold Audio, followed by Invadhertz’s Put Me Down from Vandal Records. Flava D’s Desert Lights on Hospital Records and Sustance’s Icicle remix of Searching For You, also from Vandal Records, establish the set’s dark, percussive direction.
Alibi’s Shurikan on V Recordings gives way to nScape, Inva and M.Justa’s Switch on Vandal Records, before ReDraft, HP.Ritch and Kid Kun bring Monday Mood back to Tenfold Audio. Minor Forms’ Shadows on Vandal Records and Hybris’ The Cleaner on Critical Music lead into the Breaks of Special Request’s Minor Science remix of Stairfoot Lane Bunker on Houndstooth.
Dunk’s Sound of a Dub on Skankandbass returns the first hour to drum and bass before Enei, Jakes and Particle’s Fame on Critical Music and S.P.Y’s Come Back To Me on Hospital Records. Missy Elliott’s Get Ur Freak On on Elektra/EEG provides an R&B detour before Esher’s own Oculus on Interstellar Audio introduces the guest’s hour.
Esher follows with Fre4knc and Klinical’s The Shaman from Flexout Audio, then Mefjus’ Skeptical remix of Sinkhole on Vision Recordings. QZB’s Break Neck Speed on Critical Music, Wingz’s Resistance on Music Squad and Enei’s Dark Move on Critical Music keep the pressure high before Koherent’s Morph returns to Flexout Audio.
Creatures and Sense MC’s Problem Kid, Subtension’s Pho and Invadhertz’s Paperbag form a Flexout Audio sequence built around compact, forceful rhythms. En:vy’s Bonfire on Flexout Audio, Rider Shafique and QZB’s City On Lock on Critical Music, Trail’s Sanguma on Flexout Audio and Document One’s 1964 on Shogun Audio extend that taut late-set momentum.
Amoss’ The Antidote and Tinnies & Ciggies both arrive via Flexout Audio, framing Sustance’s Temperance on Overview Music, Workforce’s Your Moves on Exit Records and Ground’s Touch Sensitive on Music Squad. Enei’s Sinking on Critical Music precedes Buunshin’s Dance cut Trauma on Inspected, creating a brief change in texture before the close.
Halogenix’s Fade Black remix of Blej on Critical Music and Subtension’s Tom Yum on Flexout Audio restore the programme’s hard-edged drum and bass focus. Noisia and Phace’s Buunshin remix of Micro Organism on Neosignal Recordings, Synergy and Buunshin’s Blue Veil on Vision Recordings and Urbandawn and Tyson Kelly’s Come Together on Hospital Records bring the final selection to a purposeful finish.
