Yushka presents his eighth guest show on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform with an underground Hip Hop radio focus.
Raised in Nottingham in the UK, Yushka has practised his DJ skills at free parties, raves, festivals and club nights across the UK, Ireland and, more recently, Vietnam since the mid-2000s. He was a founding member of Nottingham’s What The Funk? DJ ensemble and is behind Nottingham’s Shits and Giggles and Hot-Point Sound Systems.
As a teenager, he was interested in how music was put together and enjoyed making mixtapes, although he initially had no way to fund DJ equipment. With access to basic software and a CD recorder, he began making mixes to distribute at school, earning respect among his schoolmates as a DJ.
In 2004, at the age of 22, he was able to perform on DJ equipment for the first time. By 2006, he was playing weekly Sh!ts and GIggles gigs in Nottingham’s bars and nightclubs with co-host and founder Animinimal of Deck-starter and Catalyst.
As the events grew, their venues’ failing PA systems needed reinforcement, leading to the creation of the Sh!ts and G!ggles sound system. After time spent listening to tunes with the now legendary Matty C of Hanoi Hi-Fi, Hotpoint Sound System of Nottingham was born.
This brought underground free parties and collaborations with East Midlands promoters including Substance D&B, Pure Filth, TSA303, Monkey Nuts and Psycle. Hotpoint and S&G subsequently became known for their multi-genre nights and parties.
He has supported Drum and Bass legends EZ Rollers and Kenny Ken, and has played at Vietnamese venues including Sidewalk Hanoi, Broma: Not a Bar, Arcan and Bann Bar in Saigon. His selections can encompass chilled, laid-back beats, breaks, Hip Hop, electro, tech, drum and bass, funk and soul.
At the time of publication, Yushka was expected to appear as a member of the Scientific Sound Asia DJ Agency in 2021. This eighth guest show documents the broad club, party and free-party influences that inform his selections.
Yushka’s eighth guest show playlist opens with Kool Mo Dee’s Wild Wild West, Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise and Slick Rick’s Hey Young World. Slick Rick’s Def Jam Recordings release establishes the old-school Hip Hop foundation before Biz Markie, Salt-N-Pepa, Positive K and Boogie Down Productions extend the opening run.
The Chemical Brothers’ Block Rockin’ Beats, released through UMC (Universal Music Catalogue), brings in Breakbeat energy before discObeta’s Jayl Funk remix of Rare Formz on Super Hi-Fi. Empresarios’ Telephunken remix of Happy Track on Empresarios Musica introduces House Music, while the return to Block Rockin’ Beats keeps the momentum firm.
Rizzle Kicks’ Down With The Trumpets on Universal-Island Records Ltd. adds a direct Rap/Hip Hop turn before El Bomba & Hidden Riddim’s Dr Fluteski from Booty Fruit. Hazzaro’s Space Cake on Tiger Records brings Funky House into the sequence, widening the set beyond its earlier rap and breakbeat material.
Plump DJs’ Invincible on Punks leads into The Darrow Chem Syndicate’s Kid Panel remix of Bounce Of Thunder on Nipponeer Records. Deekline and Hardy Hard’s Can’t Hide It on Rat Records UK, followed by Pirate Jams’ Happy Days on Punks, make the Breaks section increasingly forceful.
Hankook’s Hard Knocks on Distorsion Records and Vibal’s Burnin’ Up on OnCue Records hold the breaks focus before Baby D’s Ddb remix of Let Me Be Your Fantasy on Production House. The Sneaky Pimps’ Spin Spin Saccharin, Freestylers’ Bad Boy Love featuring Navigator and Criminal Element Orchestra’s Put The Needle To The Record add further contrast ahead of MJ Cole’s Nero remix of Sincere.
Flash Cats’ They All Float on Propaganda Music and Peacemaker’s Last Train on Peacemaker Breaks restore the broken-beat pressure before The Men With No Name’s Dub Conspiracy returns to Propaganda Music. Phuture Assassins’ Before Dawn on Suburban Base Records raises the pace with Drum and Bass, and Dead Prez, People’s Army and Tahir close with It’s Bigger Than Hip Hop.
