Marco Mei presents episode 5 of his 2021 radio series on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, music-news platform and events promoter specialising in electronic music across Asia, with audiences in Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
Marco Mei is an Italian DJ and producer with over three decades of experience. His background in afrobeat, funk, disco and early electronic music laid the groundwork for a career that has taken him to clubs and festivals across the globe since the early 1990s.
A residency at Pacha Club in Sharm-El-Sheikh marked an early international step, followed by appearances at Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk. Over the years he has shared bills with Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void among others.
In 2009 he formed Bicycle Corporation with Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, a production project built around house and techno. Signed to 17:44 Records, their catalogue spans labels including Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox, with over fifty tracks and remixes drawing support from Sneak, Mauro Picotto, Dubfire, Axwell, Danny Tenaglia and Above and Beyond.
Based in Taipei, his party Ciao Taipei helped embed him in the local scene and expand his network across South East Asia. He is available for bookings through the Scientific Sound Asia radio station and DJ agency, and updates are available on Facebook.
Marco Mei's 30th January 2021 show opens with Salt City Orchestra's The Book, whose Soulful House warmth establishes the opening mood. Themba and Thakzin's Sound Of Freedom on Armada Music adds an Afro House character within a Dance Music pulse, before Yulia Niko and Bombossa Brothers' La Playita featuring Totó La Momposina on Get Physical introduces Deep House warmth rooted in Colombian folkloric vocal tradition.
Alex Niggemann's Technology in the Fabrizio Mammarella Remix on Aeon precedes Jansons and Liz Cass's Less Ordinary on Classic, carrying the set into Tech House territory. Mark Broom's Hear Me on Rekids brings in House Music, while Dennis Ferrer and Disciples with James Yuill's Whisper and Jaden Thompson's Closer on Cuttin' Headz deepen the club focus through Deep Tech House.
Duran Duran's Air Race in the Jose Nunez Main Mix recasts the 1984 track as a Nu-Disco edit within a House Music framework. Anfisa Letyago's Carl Cox-endorsed So Good on Intec Digital supplies the set's most forceful Peak Time Techno moment.
Super Flu and Angelov's Erq on Monaberry and Yeröm's Anomaly in the Remotion Remix on Sync Forward introduce Melodic House and Techno before Radio Slave's Killer in the Attack Ships On Fire Remix brings a second Techno peak. Kozo's See A Man About A Horse on Opulence and Logic1000's Like My Way on Therapy follow, then Mr. Fingers's Nyte Light on Alleviated Records anchors the sequence in classic Chicago Deep House and the genre's foundational history.
Oliver Deutschmann's Wach in the Marus Remix gives way to Roman Flügel's Outro on Sister Midnight, bringing Electro into the later section. Personify's You Can Be a Star on Kampana and Roy Ayers's Runnin Away in the Personify Edit turn towards Disco and Funk, reworking the 1978 recording by the Jazz Music vibraphonist.
Stefano Mango's The Storm on Fogbank Recordings brings Funky House to the late section, while The O'Jays' Darlin' Darlin' Baby in the Pete Maxey Rework keeps the Disco and Soulful House thread intact. Jessie Ware's Running in the Disclosure VIP 2021 Remix and Joey Negro (Sessomatto) Vs Pete Heller's I Need Big Love lead into TGW's Fighter on Xclusive Records and DJ Dep's We Lost Music on Transmit Recordings, closing an episode that covers more genre ground than the previous three January 2021 Marco Mei shows.
