The Berlin/UK The musical ensemble Many Hands DJ duo share the tracklist for Basement Soul Show 13 on Scientific Sound Asia, originally broadcast on Friday, 6th March. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, promoter, DJ agency and music-news platform serving expatriates and local audiences in Asia, with a global following.
Many Hands is the creative project of DJs Jona J and Kava. Jona Jefferies, born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, began his DJ career in the flourishing DIY 90s free-party and rave scene of south-west England.
After moving to Ibiza, he was captivated by its Balearic sound and hedonistic style, which has kept him returning as both a partygoer and performer. Following his time in Ibiza, Jona settled in Bristol, where he embraced the city’s urban mindset and sound-system culture.
Jona performed extensively across Berlin’s music scene, gaining a following at various venues, before later returning to the UK. His track Nocturnal, a collaboration with Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering under the name Sapience, was released on Tom Middleton’s Sound Of The Cosmos label and received airplay from Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier.
Originally from New Zealand, Kava had made Berlin his home for the previous decade. His DJ journey began in Wellington, where he was influenced by Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass.
Kava played a key role in New Zealand’s vinyl culture and hosted numerous radio shows. After relocating to Berlin, he co-hosted Float Some and Jet Some, a monthly radio show with Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22 fame on the now-closed Berlin Community Radio, while also performing at various venues across Berlin.
The two DJs connected through a mutual friend near Berlin’s OYE Records and quickly recognised a shared musical vision. This connection led to the creation of Many Hands, an eclectic music session held in a Berlin basement.
Jona J and Kava’s sets cover a wide spectrum, blending Disco, Soul, Latin, and Afrobeat with MPCs, drum machines, Jamaican influences from New York and West African rhythms on synthesizers. Their music is sometimes quirky and sometimes intense, while being made for the dance floor.
Many Hands Basement Soul Show 13 episode opens with Grace Jones’s Nightclubbing, a Pop selection on Universal Music Group International, before Mosca’s Fever Version brings Breaks through LAVALAVA. Apiento’s Things You Do for Love (Machine Mix) follows with Electronica from Test Pressing Recordings.
Glen Ricks’s I Have Been Waiting supplies Reggae from Emotional Rescue, before Androo’s Synch Dancehall introduces the dancehall thread. DJ Nervoso’s Kuduro cut Ah Ah brings Bass / Club from Principe, while Poison Chang’s Love the Woman adds UK Garage through Soul Jazz Records.
Jah Shaka’s Come and Get Dub keeps the dub element in view before Simone’s Mabsouta brings Disco from Delta Sound. Donald Byrd / Issac Hayes’s Jazz-Funk selection Sexy Dancer leads into DEA’s Maxi & Zissou, which introduces Nu-Disco on Record Union.
Nicholas’s Messages From The East returns to Electronica via Shall Not Fade, before Symptoms of Love’s Nightwatch (Cassette Mix) moves into House Music on Planet Trip Records. Pat + Pats’ Tobago (Bolas & Dama Dub) precedes Theo Parrish, Lori, Silentjay, Simon Mavin, Perrin Moss and Paul Bender’s What You Gonna Ask For (Theo’s Mix), a Deep House cut on Sound Signature.
Broad Street Pressure featuring Boyd Jarvis’s Tribal Pressure gives way to Sgt. Rapp’s Bad Times and Hot Street’s Body Work / LSD3 edit. Sa-Ra’s Death Of A Star, Peter Britto’s I Want Your Love, Steve Spacek and Duke Hugh’s Follow Me Dub, and Wajeed and Ideeya’s Strength (Radio Version) extend the set’s shifting selection.
Africaine 808’s Cobijas (Jan Schulte Mix) brings Afrobeat and Indie Dance from Vulkandance, before Equiknoxx’s Congo Get Slap (Mark Ernestus Mix) returns to Bass / Club through DDS. Chameleon’s Links closes with Intelligent Jungle on GLR, giving the final stretch a more broken rhythmic focus.
