DJ Joshua presented a two-hour edition of Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia on 7 September 2020. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian and international electronic music radio station, promoter, music-news platform and DJ agency connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
DJ Joshua is a Portuguese music lover and collector, qualities that shape his approach to music. From Évora, Portugal, he is particularly drawn to electronic music.
His interests extend across electronic styles, from House and Drum and Bass to Chill-out and Techno. He began making his first mixes in the early nineties and became an avid vinyl collector.
He began on local radio shows, playing almost every genre of electronic music, and performed at events planned with friends. As his interest grew and Portugal's rave scene gathered pace, he saw radio as a way to reach an audience.
His connection with the music was intense, although he stepped away from the scene after the birth of his daughter. After several years of fatherhood, he returned to radio to satisfy that enthusiasm and created Floating Beats Sessions.
His weekly Floating Beats show gives him room to explore progressive, calmer, melodic and techno sounds. Its second-hour companion, Velvety Elements, focuses on softer house selections and their varied elements.
Joshua said: 'Music is an art form. It is the fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move. This is a place where you hear sounds that can float and end up falling onto your body, enjoy it.'
In his weekly shows, Joshua explores House Music and Techno sub-genres, frequently including Deep House, Tech House, Melodic House, Detroit Techno, Soulful House, Progressive House, Techno, Vocal House and Melodic Techno. These selections show the range of styles he brings to both programmes.
In the first hour, Floating Beats opens with DJ W!ld's Guti remix of The Cunninglinguist on Moan, bringing in Deep Tech House. Nima Gorji's Pornbugs remix of In Da Desert on Bondage Music follows with a more spacious Deep House feel.
Halo Varga and Proudly People's Basement Track on Inmotion Music moves the hour towards Tech House, followed by Ben Sterling's The Energy on Hot Creations. Yaya's Evolver on Desolat and Andrae's Bedran remix of Gimme on Great Stuff Recordings keep the first-hour sequence rooted in club-focused rhythms.
Cevin Fisher's The Way We Used To in its Original Hard Mix on Maxi Records introduces House Music to the selection. Hector Couto's I Feel You on ABODE Records and ANOTR's James Dexter remix of Hypnosis on NO ART then return to the tougher, deeper side of the programme.
Dave Angel's Quartz on Anjunadeep closes the Floating Beats portion with a deep-house finish. The record provides a measured handover from the first hour's deep-tech and tech-house material to the warmer second programme.
In the second hour, Velvety Elements begins with Mike Rosales' Swingers on TR Records. Steffi featuring Virginia's Reasons on Dolly follows, keeping the opening of the hour focused on house-rooted selections.
Soldatov's City Life on Gardash Records returns to Deep House before Ian O'Donovan's Death on the Balcony remix of Fallen Reign on When We Dip Records introduces Organic House. The pairing shifts the second hour from direct house grooves towards a more organic melodic feel.
Markus Homm's Beneath Usual remix of Some Day on Orpheus Recordings and Mandana's Chris Stussy remix of Le Cockpit on MicroHertz keep the programme in deep-house territory. Their placement sustains the softer direction established by Velvety Elements.
Till Von Sein and Kid Enigma's T.U.R.F. remix of Wake Up on Cacao Records leads into The Deepshakerz and Martin Wilson's Dario D'attis remix of House Want You on Safe Music. JR From Dallas' Marius Acke Floating remix of Sweet Melody on Piston Recordings and Ben Rau and Jansons' Le Fonque on Knee Deep In Sound bring the second hour to a deep-house conclusion.
