DJ Joshua presents Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, event promoter, DJ agency and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.
Based in Évora, Portugal, he has been involved with electronic music since the early 1990s and has developed his knowledge through decades of listening, collecting, DJing and broadcasting. His background spans House, Techno, Drum and Bass and Chillout, giving his radio work a broad foundation across several generations of electronic music.
During his teenage years, he became closely involved with Portugal’s developing underground scene through record collecting, local radio and events organised with friends and fellow enthusiasts. That period placed him close to the growth of rave culture in the country and helped shape the musical curiosity that continues to guide his selections.
Radio became especially important to him because it offered a way to introduce listeners to electronic music that often sat outside the mainstream. That interest in broadcasting eventually developed into the long-running Floating Beats format.
Floating Beats focuses on deeper, progressive and underground electronic music, with Techno, melodic material and hypnotic structures playing an important role in its identity. The programme gives him room to work with longer transitions and gradual changes in energy rather than relying solely on peak-time selections.
Velvety Elements provides a complementary space centred more closely on House Music. Deep House, Soulful House, Vocal House and groove-led material give the series a warmer character while retaining the careful pacing found throughout Joshua’s radio work.
After stepping away from regular musical activity for a period to concentrate on family life, he returned to DJing and broadcasting with renewed focus. That return eventually expanded beyond radio into a growing body of production work under several different aliases.
As Joshua Fernand, he concentrates primarily on contemporary Techno and more driving electronic material. Releases including Blue River on MixCult Digital and Breaking Rocks and Tearing Metal through his own JFLM Recordings represent the tougher side of his studio work.
The Joshua Fernand project also reaches into deeper and more melodic territory through tracks such as Closed Door and Open Door on Radickal Records. Killer’s Plan on Rice Bowl Recordings extends that side of his catalogue towards Melodic House and Techno.
Joshua Marian carries much of his House-focused production work and connects naturally with the warmer direction of Velvety Elements. Releases including Soul Zone, Love My Soul, Tengo Rojo, Restless Lips, Always on My Mind and I Can Go, You Can See explore deeper, soulful and groove-led House.
His K Joshua alias moves into more hypnotic and experimental electronic music. Tracks such as Promised Work on Kopoc, Stranger Things on dublucid and As You Are on Liberty Rhythm draw on Dub Techno, Ambient and deeper rhythmic structures.
He also founded JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his productions and collaborative projects. The label gives him greater control over how new material is released while providing a dedicated home for music connected with the different sides of his studio work.
That production activity now feeds directly back into his radio programmes, giving him an even wider pool of ideas to draw from as a selector. Floating Beats explores deeper, progressive, hypnotic and Techno-oriented music, while Velvety Elements concentrates on warmer House built around groove, soul and understated movement.
Together, the two programmes reflect the same musical curiosity that has followed Joshua from his early years collecting records in Portugal into his current work as a DJ, producer and label owner. His approach remains centred on rhythm, melody, atmosphere and the emotional connection that carefully selected electronic music can create with the listener.
He opens Floating Beats 459 with Robert Hood's "Drive", setting a firm Techno foundation before Sasha's "Ripcord" brings in a broader progressive edge. Brame & Hamo and Steve Lawler with MC Johnny Def keep the first hour tense and club-focused, balancing driving rhythms with a looser underground feel.
DJ Ze MigL pushes the set back towards tougher techno territory before Danny Tenaglia's dub mix of Giorgio Moroder adds a more stripped, rolling groove. Ian O'Donovan's remix of Triumph then introduces a clear Progressive House lift without breaking the darker mood established earlier.
Petit Beurre and Madben continue the deeper electronic progression, with Madben receiving another Ian O'Donovan remix before F.E.M and Theobald Ringer close the hour with "Delta 97". Floating Beats 459 therefore balances driving Techno, progressive tension and dubby club material, with Joshua keeping the energy controlled rather than forcing the set into one narrow style.
Velvety Elements 031 begins with Evren Furtuna and DJ Fudge, immediately shifting the tone towards warmer Deep House and more soulful rhythmic detail. Lauhaus with Mario Franca and Demuir's Playboy Edit of KE then strengthen the groove before Dimmish and James Dexter bring a tighter, more stripped-back club feel.
Platzdasch and Dix, Rocco Rodamaal and Kyle Kinch's remix of Vanilla Ace with Venky keep the middle of the hour rooted in deep, rolling House Music. Vasily Umanets and the Alex Ranerro remix of Darius Syrossian then move the set further towards Deep Tech House, adding more pressure without losing the warmth of the earlier selections.
De La Swing and Loco Dice with Eddie Fowlkes close Velvety Elements 031 with groove-heavy underground house, giving the second hour a stronger tech-driven finish. Across the full programme, he mixes Techno and Progressive House in Floating Beats with Deep House, Deep Tech House and classic underground House Music in Velvety Elements.
