DJ Joshua presents the Floating Beats and Velvety Elements editions featured in this August 2020 programme on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
DJ Joshua, whose real name is Joshua Mar, is a Portuguese music lover and collector, qualities that epitomise his character. Hailing from Évora, Portugal, his collection centres on electronic music and spans styles from House Music and Drum and Bass to Chill-out and Techno.
His weekly Floating Beats show gave him space to explore progressive, calmer, melodic and Techno sounds. Velvety Elements joined it as a second radio show, with the second hour dedicated to the softest house music and its many elements.
He started as a disc jockey, making his first mixes in the early nineties, and became an avid vinyl collector. He began on local radio shows covering almost every electronic music genre and performed at House Music and Techno events he planned with friends.
As the rave scene in Portugal grew, he recognised radio as a way to attract an audience. After the birth of his daughter, he stepped away from the music scene before returning to his love of music and creating Floating Beats Sessions following several years of fatherhood.
He later created another programme to present the deep and soulful expression of House Music, and Velvety Elements was born. In closing, Joshua has this to say 'Music is an art form. It is the fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move. This is a place where you hear sounds that can float and end up falling onto your body, enjoy it.'
In his weekly shows, Joshua explores House Music and Techno sub-genres including Deep House, Tech House, Melodic House, Detroit House, Soulful House, Progressive House, Techno, Vocal House and Melodic Techno. His podcasts have been broadcast on House Music and Techno radio stations internationally.
In the first hour, DJ Joshua opened Floating Beats with Todd Bodine and Mihai Popoviciu’s Spacejunkies before J. Dahlback and J.L. Huhta’s Midnight Express Part 1 brought Techno (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic) from SVEK. The pairing established the programme’s underground electronic focus without forcing the opening selection into an uncertain genre classification.
Mancini’s Cab Drivers remix of Jijijaja on hedZup records introduced Deep Tech House, while Brawther’s Fairground on Cabinet Records moved into House Music. Both records kept the first hour close to club-focused rhythm and concise, functional arrangements.
Dachshund’s As If By Magic on Gruuv brought in Deep House, followed by Collective Machine’s Huru Voodoo on Variety Music and its Tech House foundation. Charlie Banks’ Archie Hamilton remix of Flight Mode on MicroHertz then returned to Deep Tech House.
Ben Rau’s Do Your Thing on INKAL extended the Deep Tech House thread before Deep Active Sound and Ira Ange’s Frink remix of My Secrets on Plastic City Suburbia softened the tone through Deep House. Seb Zito’s The Source on Fuse London and Timid Boy’s Anek remix of Nida on Variety Music closed Floating Beats with Tech House precision.
In the second hour, Velvety Elements began with Pepe Bradock’s Deep Burnt on Atavisme and Soldatov’s City Life on Gardash Records, both rooted in Deep House. Their measured pace gave the programme a warmer and more spacious opening than the first hour.
Devv’s Cleave Martinez remix of Reverie on Farmat introduced Deep Tech House, before Black Loops’ Higher on Planet E Communications returned to House Music. Luna City Express followed with Think About You on Robsoul Recordings, bringing Funky House into the hour.
Igor Gonya and Tamandua Twist’s Platzdasch Feels It remix of The Bee’s Knees on Gents & Dandy’s added Indie Dance character. Stranger Tourists’ Desire on Suprematic and Stanccione’s Jimpster remix of Quintana on COCADA MUSIC then settled back into Deep House.
Valdovinos’ C Moon on All Day I Dream brought Melodic House and Techno into the closing stretch. Vince Watson’s Dreamers on Yoruba Records and Zetbee’s Deep In My Soul on Plastik People Digital finished Velvety Elements in Deep House territory.
