The Funk Sessions’ eighth show on Scientific Sound Asia features Yushka and My Catt. Scientific Sound Asia is an electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Since 2019, the Funk Sessions crew have brought party-focused selections to dance floors across Ho Chi Minh City. The DJ and party crew play funk classics and old-school hip hop alongside disco, party breaks, ghetto funk and other styles.
The group comprises international DJs from Australia and the UK who are based primarily in Vietnam. Their experience includes club nights, free parties and festivals, as well as supporting established artists from the underground music world.
Their selections are strongly influenced by breakbeat pioneers. That influence is especially audible in their hip hop, funky breaks and ghetto funk sets, while also informing their wider range of mixes.
Funk Sessions hold regular events in Ho Chi Minh City at Broma (not a bar), TNR (your favourite dive bar), Indika and Apt852. Past and present venues also include Secret Weekend, Tempo, Arcan, Haus, Banana Mama, Piu Piu, Sky 9, Rogue Saigon, Soma and Saigon Outcast.
Funk Dem Beats is a regular Ho Chi Minh City club event based mainly at TNR (everyone's favourite dive bar). The night brings live musicians and DJs into a rapidly changing jam session that spans numerous genres.
This episode presents a multi-genre selection assembled by two Funk Dem Beats DJs. My Catt and Yushka each bring a distinct approach to the programme.
My Catt's contribution moves from laid-back beats to dancefloor-focused material across a broad range of styles. The selection shifts between lighter passages and more forceful tracks without limiting itself to one sound.
Yushka contributes hip hop and ghetto funk with a strong presence from Chinese Man Records productions. The mix combines forceful beats with prominent instrumental lines.

The Funk Sessions eighth show with Yushka and My Catt opens with Carol Kim's Sài Gòn on Saigon Supersound, a Nhạc Vàng recording, before Hopeton Lewis' Rivers Of Babylon on Moll Selekta introduces Reggae. Toots & The Maytals' Pressure Drop on Island Records and The Upsetters' Return Of The Vampire on Upsetter keep the early section rooted in reggae.
Zé Bigode's Tikulafe on Little Beat More brings a Dance Music turn before Boney M.'s Daddy Cool on Hansa and Gibson Brothers' Cuba on Island Records add Nu-Disco. Restless Leg Syndrome's Chucky (The Devil) on Duzz Down San Records brings rap and Hip Hop, while Parov Stelar's Libella Swing on Atage Noir Recordings moves into Breaks.
High Step Society's Naturally (No Bad Dreams) on Speakeasy Electro Swing leads into Gaudi's Bad Boy Bass on Six Degrees, where Electronica becomes more prominent. Dizzee Rascal and Armand Van Helden's Bonkers on Dirtee Stank follows with a House Music charge.
DJ Rap's Spritual Aura on Propa Talent introduces Drum and Bass, followed by the Freestylers' Breakfastaz Remix of Warrior Charge on Against The Grain and its sharper Breakbeat rhythm. Pendulum's Fasten Your Seatbelt featuring the Freestylers on Breakbeat Kaos returns to drum and bass, before Mark Archer's Sanxion Remix of Armageddon on Bangface returns to breaks.
Simtek's Big Bam Boo on Off Me Nut Records adds a mainstage lift, and DJ Luck & MC Neat's Bassline Remix of A Little Bit Of Luck on Future Flex brings in UK Garage. Aquasky's Humble (Original Remix) on Passenger and DJ Vadim's No No No featuring Tiggy Tafari on BBE maintain the momentum before the Chinese Man Records material arrives.
Scratch Bandits Crew's Algorithmic featuring ASM and Youthstar's Nanana featuring Deluxe, both associated with Chinese Man Records, bring hip hop and electronica together before Stevie Wonder's Flow Lab Kid remix of Superstition on Bandcamp adds R&B. Scratch Bandits Crew's Dicen Que featuring Feback, Lyda Aguas and Baja Frequencia on Chinese Man Records, Taiwan MC's Catalina featuring Paloma Pradal on Chinese Man Records, and Trúc Mai's closing Sài Gòn (2021) on Saigon Supersound finish the programme with a Bass Music edge and a return to Saigon.
