Yushka and Robson Jr. present the tenth Funk Sessions show on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Since 2019, the Funk Sessions crew have brought parties dedicated to funky music to dance floors across Ho Chi Minh City. Their selections range from funk classics and old-school hip hop to disco, party breaks and ghetto funk.
The crew comprises international DJs from Australia and the UK who are based primarily in Vietnam and aim to add variety to the local dance music scene. Their experience includes club nights, free parties and festivals, as well as supporting established figures from underground music.
Their sound is strongly influenced by the pioneers of breakbeat, particularly in the Hip Hop, Funky Breaks and Ghetto Funk they play. That influence also reaches beyond those styles and can be heard across their mixes.
Funk Sessions hold regular events in Ho Chi Minh City at Broma (not a bar), TNR (your favourite dive bar), Indika and Apt852. Previous and additional venues include Secret Weekend, Tempo, Arcan, Haus, Banana Mama, Piu Piu, Sky 9, Rogue Saigon, Soma and Saigon Outcast.
Yushka opens this edition with world sounds, hip hop and ghetto funk, bringing together grooves from different eras, remixes and original productions. The selection keeps a consistent funky emphasis while moving across a broad range of source material.
Robson Jr. follows with a tropical-infused selection that combines ghetto funk and Latin-influenced material. The programme originally aired on Tuesday 15 June 2021.
Funk Sessions episode 10 with Yushka and Robson Jr. opens with EDC’s Samba In Solitude on Blue Note, Bebo Best & The Super Lounge Orchestra’s Skeewiff remix of Soul Bossanova on Jalapeño Records, and Barbatuques’ Afro House cut Baianá on Optimo Music. Flow Dynamics’ Tremendo Boogaloo on Freestyle Records then leads into Ernesto Djédjé’s Nu-Disco track Zadie Bobo on Badmos.
The Lions bring Think (About It), featuring Noelle Scaggs, from Wagram Music before Youthstar’s Hype For The Night on Chinese Man Records adds further Hip Hop weight. The sequence also includes Max Romeo’s Marc Hype and Petko Turner Pimpernel edit of Chase The Devil on Upsetters.
The Allergies’ Lean on You, featuring Dynamite MC, arrives on Jalapeño Records alongside C.J Plus’ Japanese Twin on Rare Cuts and Chill Bump’s Rap Hiphop track The Eponym. The Herbaliser’s Song For Mary on Ninja Tune, MC Lyte’s Second Hand Audio remix of Cold Rock A Party on East West and Kool Hertz’s Breaks cut Originator on Ghetto Funk tighten the rhythmic focus.
George Kelly, DJ ''S'' and Sparky-T bring Movin To The Groovin on Chopshop before Daft Punk vs Federation Of The Disco Pimp’s Father Funk remix of Robot Rock gives the set a sharper edge. Badboe’s Breakbeat track What Is Hip on Kudos, The Bamboos and DJ Vadim’s Golden Rock on Tru Thoughts, and Palov’s Swing cut What’s That? on Wagram Music keep the pace varied.
Tito Rodriguez’s Suonho remix of Mi Guiajira Si on Glenview Records Inc gives way to Mo’Horizons’ Electronica and Broken Beat pairing of Hit The Road Jack (Pe na Estrada) on Audiopharm and Sono Rhizmo’s Barbwire on Resense. Shaolin Temple Defenders vs Dynamics contribute the Monetrik remix of International Soul on Soulbeats Records, while Odjbox’s Swing Hop track Saraghina follows Kill Emil’s Porfavor on Carnibal Records.
Rodolfo Aicardi Y su Tipica’s Kill Emil re-edit of La Colegiala on Disco Fuentes and Mo’Horizons’ Fort Knox Five remix of Drum’n’Boogaloo on Stereo Deluxe set up Monetrik’s Latin Cuts and Cumbia selections Faces of Peru and Kill Emil & Hammond Classics’ Kill The Hammond, both on Carnibal Records. S Strong’s Return of the Mambo, Andy Taylor’s Broken Beat track Jailed Thoughts on Resense and Supersan’s World track Compasso in the Nirso Remix extend the tropical direction.
The closing stretch brings Tito Chico y Orquestra’s Palov edit of Camisola and Voodoo Funk’s La Culebra, both on Carnibal Records, before Basement Freaks’ Balkanizacia on Breakbeat Paradise Recordings. Joe Cuba Sextet and Jose Cheo Feliciano’s K & F edit of Oye Coma Va on UMG precedes Balkan Beat Box’s Bulgarian Chicks, featuring Vlada Tomova and Kristin Espeland, on Essay Recordings.
