DJ Andrew M premiered episode 03 of his all-vinyl ‘Disco’ show on Scientific Sound Asia on Sunday, November 3rd, 2019. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Andrew began his career hosting Hip Hop radio shows in Australia during the 1980s and 1990s. He also held residencies at clubs across Australia.
In recent years, he performed at private parties and events, receiving positive feedback for sets at nightclubs and bars in Singapore. At the time of publication, he had recently returned from a series of private events in the US, Canada, and Europe.
He was then travelling for private events in India, Dubai and Johannesburg. When not engaged in private events, he searches through records and playing the role of selector at vinyl gigs.
His musical interests are rooted in funk and hip-hop. He brings broad musical knowledge, a large digital and vinyl collection spanning many styles, and decades of DJing experience.
Over the past decade, he has performed at clubs and events in the region, including Tanjong Beach Club, Kult, CAD, Artemis, Loof, Zouk, Tippling Club, Choice Cuts, Great Escape, and regional dates in Indonesia and Thailand. The show focuses on Disco, combining less familiar selections with classics.
The preferred format is the 12-inch single, allowing full extended versions to play in their entirety rather than being cut short as they might be at a party. That approach gives the programme space for the records to unfold.
DJ Andrew M opens Disco 03 with Winners’ “Get On Up And Do It” before Dennis Coffey brings the selection firmly into Funk with “Gimme That Funk.” Coffey’s career was deeply connected to Detroit funk through his work with Motown’s Funk Brothers, making the record a natural part of this original-vinyl selection.
Bunny Sigler’s “By The Way You Dance” moves into Disco, combining the Philadelphia soul tradition with a long-form dancefloor arrangement. G.Q. follow with the 1979 “Disco Nights (Rock-Freak),” another original disco-era recording rather than a later house reinterpretation.
Saint Tropez continue the disco focus with “Fill My Life With Love” before Ahzz’s “New York’s Movin’” brings in a more stripped-back New York funk and disco sound. Originally issued around 1980, the Ahzz recording is closely associated with the independent disco and funk catalogue of producers Peter Brown and Patrick Adams.
Pure Energy’s “Party On” comes from their original 1980 output before 7th Wonder’s “Do It With Your Body” keeps the programme centred on funk, soul and dance music. The Monster Orchestra then return the selection to orchestral disco with “Hangin’ Out,” reinforcing the late-seventies character of the second half.
Rick James closes Disco 03 with “You & I,” bringing the set back towards Soul and funk through his original Motown-era sound. Across the programme, Andrew M moves between disco and funk with soul running through both styles, using original vinyl rather than later remixes or contemporary re-edits.
