Bicycle Corporation's Roots 3 mix blends African, disco, funk, jazz and samba influences, streaming now on Scientific Sound Asia radio.
Nu-Disco developed during the late 1990s and 2000s as producers revisited the rhythms, instrumentation and production methods of 1970s Disco and 1980s Boogie. The style combined these influences with House Music, electronic production and modern club arrangements.
Its foundations trace back to Disco edits, French House, Italo Disco revivalism and the renewed interest in analogue synthesisers, live bass and funk-influenced grooves. Producers often reworked older records through sampling and editing, while also creating original material with a retro electronic character.
Artists including Daft Punk, Metro Area, Lindstrøm, Todd Terje, Crazy P and Prins Thomas helped establish different sides of the sound. Their music ranged from sample-based club tracks to slower cosmic productions, live-band arrangements and melodic electronic Disco.
Nu-Disco commonly uses four-to-the-floor drums, prominent basslines, rhythm guitar, synthesiser arpeggios and polished vocal hooks. Some tracks sit close to Disco House or Funky House, while others draw more heavily on Boogie, Italo Disco, Balearic music and electronic pop.
The category became increasingly visible through independent labels, digital record shops and international club scenes during the 2000s and 2010s. It also helped renew interest in original Disco, Boogie and European electronic records from earlier decades.
Nu-Disco now includes original productions, re-edits and modern releases that update classic dance music without reproducing it exactly. Its defining character comes from the connection between Disco-era groove, contemporary production and a clear focus on melody, rhythm and club use.
