Event Details

After an unforgettable run as a radio series on Scientific Sound Asia and five successful live editions, Bicycle Corporation and Scientific Sound Asia returned to HAKU Taipei for the sixth edition of Roots. The night continued the established focus on Afrobeat, Nu Disco, Disco and Disco Re-Edits, bringing the warm and groove-led character of the programme back onto a Taipei dancefloor.

By this point, Roots had become a recurring club concept with a clear musical identity rather than simply a one-off extension of a radio programme. Marco Mei and Murphy Kin remained at the centre of the format, giving each edition continuity while allowing the selections themselves to change from one event to the next.

Moving the concept into HAKU Taipei allowed those ideas to develop in a physical club environment. Rather than selecting only for listeners following the broadcast, Marco Mei and Murphy Kin could respond directly to the room and shape the music around the dancers in front of them.

マルコは、イタリアのプロデューサーであるStefano Ugliano（別名6884）とともに、Bicycle Corporationのもう一方のメンバーでもあります。制作プロジェクトはHouseやTechno、それに類する電子音楽のスタイルを経てきましたが、マルコ自身のDJ活動はDeep House、Disco House、Nu Disco、Tech Houseなど、さらに幅広いダンスミュージックのジャンルにまで及んでいます。

ディスコ・リエディットは、古い音源に現代のDJセットにおける新たな役割を与えることで、音楽方針にさらなる重要な層を加えました。拡張されたイントロダクションや変更されたブレイク、再構成されたインストゥルメンタルパートによって、馴染み深い楽曲でもミックスしやすくなりながら、原曲の個性を損なうことなく保つことができます。

Afrobeatは、夜のリズム表現の幅を、従来のアメリカやEuropean Discoの系譜を超えて広げました。重層的なパーカッション、繰り返されるグルーヴ、そして生演奏による楽器が、それらの選曲をFunk、Disco、Houseと自然に結びつけながら、異なる音楽的基盤をもたらしました。

Murphy KinはMarco Meiとともに再登場し、第6回目にもまた幅広い音楽的背景をもたらしました。Taipei-based DJであり、キュレーター、レコードレーベルの関係者でもある彼は、長年にわたり同地域のハウス、ディスコ、そしてインディペンデントなクラブ文化に携わってきました。

もともと上海出身で、のちに台北を拠点とするミューラーは、両都市のバー、クラブ、パーティー、そして音楽キュレーション・プロジェクトを通じて活動を展開してきました。その経歴から、特定のシーンへの厳密な拘りよりも、幅広い音楽知識が重視されるようなイベントにこそ適していたのです。

マーフィーはDJ Lucyとしても知られており、地域一帯でディスコを中心としたイベントや音楽のキュレーションに携わるようになりました。彼の幅広い関心は、ハウス、ソウル、ジャズ、R&B、Hip Hop、ロックなどさまざまなスタイルへと広がり、彼のセットには意図的に幅広い基盤が備えられています。

マルコとマーフィーのパートナーシップは、互いに重複する音楽的領域を十分に共有していたため、同一に聞こえることなく連続性を生み出すことができました。ディスコやハウスが共通の土台となり、それぞれのレコードコレクションが夜の各セッションに異なる影響をもたらしました。

By the sixth edition, that partnership had become inseparable from the identity of Roots. Returning audiences could expect Marco Mei and Murphy Kin to lead the night, making their chemistry and selection style as important as the individual records being played.

また、連続性のおかげで、シリーズは新鮮味や常に変わるヘッドラインアーティストに頼ることなく、展開を重ねることができました。新しいレコードやさまざまな組み合わせ、そしてダンスフロアの反応の変化によってイベントを刷新しつつも、中心となる音楽哲学は一貫して守られていました。

Haku Taipeiはその開発の物理的な拠点であり続け、Scientific Sound Asia Radioは放送によるつながりを維持しました。したがって、同じコンセプトは台湾における定期的なクラブイベントとして、そしてアジア各地や国際的に聴取者に届く番組として、両方の形で存在し得るのです。

That relationship between radio and nightlife remained one of the most distinctive aspects of Roots. Listeners could encounter the programme remotely and then experience Marco Mei and Murphy Kin applying the same musical approach directly in front of a club audience.

Bicycle Corporationにとって、このシリーズは同社のハウスおよびエレクトロニック・ミュージック作品の背後に存在する影響にも、より多くのスペースを割く機会となりました。ファンク、ディスコ、ソウル、アフロビートといった要素が、後にそれらがインスピレーションを与えた制作手法やリズムを通じてではなく、直接的に表れるようになるのです。

したがって、第6回目は、これまでのイベントで確立されたフォーマットを新たに作り直す必要はありませんでした。その発展は、同じ音楽的領域をさらに掘り下げ、アフロビート、ニュー・ディスコ、ディスコ、そしてリエディット文化をつなぐ新たな方法を見いだすことによってもたらされました。

アフロビートは、番組のさまざまな要素をつなぐリズミカルな架け橋として、特に効果的であり続けました。繰り返される楽器のフレーズや重層的なパーカッションは、クラブシーンに必要な身体的な躍動感を保ちながら、ファンクやディスコへと自然に導くことができました。

ディスコは、古い録音が博物館の展示品として扱われる必要はないことを改めて示し続けました。厳選された楽曲は、同じ音楽的語彙を踏襲した最新の作品と並べて聴かせることで、現代のダンスフロアにおいてもなお強力に機能しうるのです。

ヌ・ディスコは、クラシックな影響を現代の電子音楽制作に取り入れることで、新たな世代の解釈を加えました。現代的なアレンジは、単に過去を再現しようとするのではなく、ディスコ由来のベースラインやストリングス、パーカッション、ボーカルと上手く融合させることができます。

リエディットは、両方のDJにとって、連続したセットの中でそれらの時代をつなぐためのもう一つの実用的な手法を提供しました。古い楽曲は、オリジナルを特徴づけていた音楽的要素を保ちながら、より長いミックスや強調されたインストゥルメンタルパート、あるいは拡張されたグルーヴを中心に再構成することが可能になりました。

主な目的は、依然としてダンスフロアでの動きと楽しみにありました。選曲には、アフロビート、ファンク、ディスコ、ハウスといったジャンル間の歴史的なつながりが見られましたが、それらは説明ではなく、リズムとグルーヴを通じて伝えられていました。

Scientific Sound Asia continues to connect this period with its current events, radio station, DJ agency and music news sections. The Taipei editions of Roots document how the organisation extended a radio concept into a recurring physical event elsewhere in Asia while maintaining the same core artists and musical direction.
