After an unforgettable run as a radio series on Scientific Sound Asia and four successful live editions, Bicycle Corporation and Scientific Sound Asia returned to HAKU Taipei for the fifth edition of Roots. The night continued the established focus on Afrobeat, Nu Disco, Disco and Disco Re-Edits, bringing the warm and groove-led identity of the programme back onto a Taipei dancefloor.

By the fifth edition, Roots had developed into a recognisable club concept rather than simply a live extension of a radio show. Marco Mei and Murphy Kin remained at the centre, allowing each event to develop through different records while retaining the same musical philosophy.

HAKU Taipeiにラジオのコンセプトを持ち込むことで、それらの音楽的アイデアを物理的なクラブ空間で展開できるようになりました。国際的な放送視聴者向けに選曲するのではなく、DJたちは会場の雰囲気に直接応じ、フロアにいる人々の様子に合わせて夜が進んでいくようにしました。

Marcoは、イタリア人プロデューサーのStefano Ugliano（別名6884）とともにBicycle Corporationのもう一方のメンバーでもあります。この制作プロジェクトでは、HouseやTechno、それに類する電子音楽のスタイルを手がけてきましたが、MarcoのDJセットはDeep House、Disco House、Nu Disco、Tech Houseなど、グルーヴ重視のダンスミュージックのさらに広範な領域にまで及びます。

アフロビートは、番組に独自のリズム言語を加え、現代のクラブ文化の背後にある音楽的“ルーツ”が包含し得るものの概念を広げました。重層的な打楽器、繰り返されるグルーヴ、そして生演奏による楽器編成により、アフロビートの選曲はファンク、ディスコ、ハウスと自然に結びつきました。

マルコのセレクターとしての経験は、ジャンルを孤立した領域として捉えることなく、それらの関係性を聴き手に伝える力を彼にもたらしました。リズムやベースラインが、ダンスフロアを第一に考えながらも、一つの音楽的伝統から別の伝統へと移行する流れを導くことができました。

Murphy KinはMarco Meiとともに再登場し、第5回目にもまた幅広い音楽的視野をもたらしました。Taipei-based DJであり、音楽キュレーター、レコードレーベルの関係者でもある彼は、この地域のハウス、ディスコ、そしてインディペンデントなクラブ文化にわたって長い歴史を築いてきました。

もともと上海出身で、のちに台北を拠点として活動していたマーフィーは、両都市のバー、クラブ、パーティー、そして音楽キュレーションプロジェクトなどにおいて幅広く活躍してきました。その経歴から、彼は特定のシーンへの忠誠心よりも、レコードの選定と音楽的文脈に基づいたアプローチを取るようになりました。

Murphy Kinは、DJ Lucyとしても知られ、地域を中心にディスコ系のイベントや音楽のキュレーションに携わるようになりました。彼の幅広い関心は、ハウス、ソウル、ジャズ、R&B、Hip Hop、ロックなどさまざまなスタイルに及び、彼のセットには意図的に広い基盤が備わっています。

マルコとマーフィーのパートナーシップが機能したのは、二人のセレクターが、同じようにアプローチしなくても連続性を保てるほど十分な音楽的共通点を持っていたからです。ディスコやハウスが共通の基盤を提供し、個々の影響やレコードコレクションが、各回ごとに異なる展開を生み出す余地を与えていました。

By the fifth event, that relationship had become part of the identity of Roots itself. Returning audiences could expect Marco Mei and Murphy Kin rather than a constantly changing headline structure, allowing the musical chemistry between them to become one of the main attractions.

Haku Taipeiはこのシリーズに一貫した物理的な拠点を提供し、Scientific Sound Asia Radioが放送のつながりを維持しました。そのため、同じ音楽コンセプトが、台湾でのクラブイベントとしてだけでなく、アジア各地や国際的にもリスナーに届く番組としても存在し得たのです。

That relationship between radio and nightlife remained one of the strongest parts of Roots. Listeners could first hear the musical approach through Bicycle Corporation’s broadcasts before encountering Marco Mei and Murphy Kin working with the same influences in a room full of dancers.

Bicycle Corporationにとって、このシリーズは同社のハウスやエレクトロニックな制作活動の背後に存在する音楽的ルーツをも浮き彫りにしました。ファンク、ディスコ、アフロビート、ソウルといった要素が、近年のエレクトロニック・レコードにおいてわずかな影響として現れるだけでなく、直接的に表現されることもありました。

第5回目は、コンセプトがすでに十分に定着していたため、新たな音楽的アイデンティティを必要としませんでした。その展開は、セレクターたちがアフロビート、ニュー・ディスコ、ディスコ、そしてリエディット文化をさらに掘り下げていくなかで生まれ、同時にこれまでの夜の温かみと親しみやすさも維持されました。

アフロビートは、イベントで紹介された複数の伝統をつなぐリズミカルな架け橋として、特に有用であり続けました。その打楽器と繰り返される楽器のフレーズは、ファンクやディスコへと自然に展開しつつ、後のダンスミュージックの諸形態とのつながりも示していました。

ディスコは、慎重に選べば古いレコードでも現代のダンスフロアで依然として効果を発揮し得ることを示し続けました。このジャンルが持つグルーヴと生演奏の技術、そして長尺なアレンジの組み合わせは、現代的なプロダクションと並んでも力強い響きを奏でる素材であり続けました。

ヌ・ディスコは、新たなプロデューサーたちがそれらの影響を直接取り入れられるようにすることで、世代間の層をさらに一層厚くしました。現代のテクノロジーは、ディスコ由来のベースラインやストリングス、ボーカルと並びつつも、音楽を単なる過去の再現に陥らせることはありません。

リエディットは、両方のセレクターに、それらの時代をつなぐためのもう一つの実用的な手段をもたらしました。古い楽曲は、原曲を特徴づけていたフックや楽器編成、ボーカルパートなどを維持したまま、より長いミックスや現代的なクラブ向けの構成に合わせて再構築することが可能になりました。

目的は依然として、シンプルな動きと楽しみにありました。歴史的影響は、説明されるのではなくレコードそのものから聴き取られ、ベースラインやパーカッション、ボーカルが自然に音楽的なつながりを担う形となりました。

Scientific Sound Asia continues to connect this history through its current events, radio station, DJ agency and music news sections. The Taipei editions of Roots show how the organisation could extend a radio concept into a recurring physical event elsewhere in Asia while maintaining the same artists and musical direction.

Marco Mei’s continuing relationship with the platform provides a direct link between these HAKU events and Scientific Sound Asia today. His DJ agency profile documents the international career behind his long-running work with Bicycle Corporation, radio programming and club events.

Murphy Kin likewise became a recurring contributor rather than a one-off guest attached to the first editions. His continuing role strengthened the relationship between Taipei’s club community and the international audience following the Roots programme through Scientific Sound Asia.

By its fifth edition, Roots had become a firmly established meeting point between radio, club culture and musical history. Marco Mei and Murphy Kin returned to HAKU Taipei with Afrobeat, Nu Disco, Disco and Disco Re-Edits, keeping the focus on warm rhythms, deep selections and a dancefloor driven by groove.

Roots 5 therefore continued the same simple principle that had carried the series through its earlier editions. Dress cool, dress sassy, dance and feel free remained the invitation, while Marco Mei and Murphy Kin supplied the records capable of making that instruction easy to follow.
