Coh-hul presents Play It Loud episode 19 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally through its radio output.
Coh-hul is an established DJ and producer based in Ho Chi Minh City, and by 2021 he had been an artist on the Scientific Sound Asia DJ Agency for several years. His first major event was a New Year’s Eve party in northern Thailand in 2015, after which he built a reputation through his musical selections and playing style.
His sound centres on Tech House and Tech Funk, informed by Dirtybird, This Ain’t Bristol, Relief, Snatch! and Perfect Driver. He favours funky drum patterns, pounding bass lines and futuristic Sci-Fi melodies.
His DJing balances heavier passages with room for the crowd to breathe. During his five years in Saigon, he hosts his own Tech-House nights and brought busy dancefloor energy to the city.
Audiences in Ho Chi Minh City could encounter him through several residencies. His best-known party was the monthly AfterDark event, co-hosted with Broma:Not A Bar.
He was also a DJ member of the DTOX party brand and was involved with WHAT? Events and Scientific Sound Asia events. Other city appearances included The Lighthouse, Saigon Soul Pool Party, Piu Piu, Upper Saigon, Hideout, Last Call, Indika, Saigon Outcast and Rogue.
Outside Saigon, Coh-hul played the Mui Ne Music & Arts Festival and The Rock Island Club on Phu Quoc Island for New Year’s Eve. His admiration for Dirtybird Records led him to attend Dirtybird Campout alone during the summer of 2017.
While visiting the United States, he set up a renegade party at Venice Beach in Los Angeles and performed for Stacy’s at Melrose in Phoenix, Arizona. In summer 2018, he played Le Chapiteau in Marseille to a sold-out venue, which he regarded as the best set of his career to that point.
By the time of publication, he had started the YouTube show Seshnikov. The programme offered music-production tips and presented some of his new track ideas.
He was also available on Spotify and Bandcamp. At that point, his attention was focused on production and on bringing his own material to dancefloors.
His preceding programme focused on Pets Recordings and its catalogue. This edition was dedicated to Red Paradise Records from Brazil, pairing heavy Brazilian funk drum patterns with stranger textures.
The format began with new tracks from the month and a look back at an earlier selection before turning to the Red Paradise Records material. The playlist then gives Coh-hul space to present the label’s output in depth.
Coh-hul’s Play It Loud 19 episode opens with Erik Ellmann’s Private Talk on Slothboogie, bringing a Deep House foundation. Claude VonStroke and Nala’s Wet State on Dirtybird follows with Melodic House and Techno detail before Shermanology’s Shonuff on D’eaupe returns the set to Tech House.
Justin Jay’s You on Desert Hearts Records and Not Not’s Green Grass on Psycho Disco! keep the Tech House focus firm. Yolanda Be Cool and Dillon Nathaniel’s Bolivian Sunrise on Repopulate Mars extends that direction before Shiba San’s All The People on Factory 93 Records adds further club pressure.
Ekoboy appears twice with Whoo on Baikonur Recordings and Gee on Follow The Eko, retaining the Tech House emphasis. Nautik’s Work That on Basement Leak brings in Dance Music, while DJ Sniper’s Get Freaky on Ofdm Records introduces Bass House.
Dmitri Saidi’s Toma on Bunny Tiger brings the selection back to Tech House before Hood Rich’s Bring A Friend on Medium Rare Recordings sustains it. Proone79’s Whoa on My Techno Weighs A Ton moves into Peak Time Techno, then Twippy’s Trick Me on On Deck Records turns towards House Music.
The Red Paradise Records section begins with G-Spec’s Zen and Feelgood’s Don’t Smash, both rooted in Tech House. G-Spec’s Peek A Boo and Sam Shelby’s Culo follow on the same label, before Dopecreature and Michael Beggs’ Gotta Have Game brings Bass House back into the sequence.
G-Spec’s Ok Train, Venttura’s Feel The Beat and Danny Kolk and Feelgood’s Black Cat keep Red Paradise Records at the centre of the closing stretch. Sam Shelby’s Crazy, Bess Maze’s Back To The Basics and When I Need, and Steady Rock’s Play With Me close with Bass House and Funky House energy.
