Anonymous Z presents Not So Anonymous episode 35 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Anonymous Z is mostly revered in Saigon, Vietnam, as the pioneer behind the epic Mad Circus parties. He was also the organiser of Bahrain's first underground DJ collective, Glassroom, promoting events that brought mayhem to the soul.
At Glassroom, he led a group of misfits from several nationalities and organised legal parties, after-parties and occasional renegade events that local nightlife remembers as folklore. His motto then was "They tried to bury us, but they forgot we were seeds".
As part of the Banana Hustle crew, he contributed to its punchy tropical approach at events in Ho Chi Minh City and helped develop its distinctive vibe. Originally a Techno head, he developed a taste for digging out unusual Afro, House, Disco and Funk records.
His selections bring together hand-picked Techno with contemporary Indie Dance. His skills as a disc jockey led to appearances at prominent underground venues in Vietnam, including Arcan, The Lighthouse, Broma and Vitamin D after-parties.
His non-linear sets are often improvised in response to the punters, moving through several musical styles with tense, groovy bass lines and melodic storytelling. He explores world music and the oldest age of electro as part of that approach.
That range can lead to trippy, dark downtempo sets with tribal and South American influences, or darker, groove-focused Leftfield Electro infused with Nu Disco, Electroclash, Wave, New Beat and Dark Disco. The programme originally aired on Sunday 14 March 2021.
Anonymous Z's Not So Anonymous episode 35 opens with Baru's Found, Tummetott & Oscar B's Gnossienne and Baru's Lost, before Mekine U Teksi's Fremde and Voodoo Love's Kusht. Zuma Dionys's Omerar Nanda remix of Belantash introduces Downtempo on ZUMA DOMA.
Iorie's Harika Gece and Mekine U Teksi's Emigration precede Oliver Koletzki's A Tribe Called Kotori, while Dubelu & Philip Chedid's Akasha follows. Koletzki's track brings Melodic House and Techno into the set through Stil Vor Talent.
Veleyle's Omerar Nanda remix of Harem adds Organic House on Alt Orient, followed by SANDER (FR) and Jugurtha's Tunisia on the same label. Tebra's Gora brings Deep House to the sequence, while Electronica frames Tunisia.
Armen Miran and Hraach's Lullaby sits between Tebra's track and Iorie and Coss's Luca Musto remix of Tamam. The latter appears on Akumandra, before Ali Farahani and Marco Bonuso's 2017 reinterpretation of Persian Dream extends the set's leftfield character.
Karpov Not Kasparov's Mehmet Aslan remix of Choose Your Colour Gipsy Dark brings Nu-Disco through Fleeting Wax. Nour (Palestina)'s Fellaheen then makes space for the final pair of tracks.
Unders's Satori remix of Syria returns to Melodic House and Techno on Sol Selectas before Nass El Hal closes with the Arabian Panther remix of A Ya Maskine. Released through Sans Commentaire, the final record supplies the programme's African finish.
