Coh-hul presents Play it Loud 08 on Scientific Sound Asia, an episode first broadcast on Saturday, 17 October 2020. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Coh-hul is a DJ and producer based in Ho Chi Minh City and a featured artist with the agency. He made his live debut at a New Year’s Eve celebration in Northern Thailand in 2015 and has since focused on playing music for dancefloors.
His music is predominantly tech-house or tech-funk, with inspiration drawn from labels including Dirtybird, This Ain’t Bristol, Relief, Snatch and Perfect Driver. He favours energetic drum rhythms, intense basslines and futuristic sci-fi tunes, while adjusting the energy of a set to the audience.
By 2020, he had lived in Saigon for five years, organised his own tech-house nights and crafted vibrant atmospheres for local audiences. Those nights took place across numerous venues in the city.
His best-known event is the monthly “AfterDark” party, which he co-hosts with Broma Not A Bar. He is affiliated with the “DTOX” party label and has collaborated with WHAT? Events.
His Saigon appearances have included The Lighthouse, Saigon Soul Pool Party, Piu Piu, Upper Saigon, Hideout, Last Call, Indika, Saigon Outcast and Rogue. Beyond the city, he has played the Mui Ne Music & Arts Festival and The Rock Island Club on Phu Quoc Island for New Year’s Eve.
In summer 2017, his interest in Dirtybird took him alone to the Dirtybird Campout festival in the United States. While there, he organised an impromptu Venice Beach party in Los Angeles and played at Stacy’s at Melrose in Phoenix, Arizona.
The following summer, in 2018, he played a sold-out event at Marseille’s Le Chapiteau, an appearance described at the time as the pinnacle of his career. Over the following two years, he invested in a studio and began a fresh musical endeavour.
His aim was to focus on production and release music through established labels, building his profile as an emerging producer and DJ. The original article also anticipated his forthcoming performance for Scientific Sound Asia.
His previous show focused on Snatch! and brought together favoured tracks from the label. For this edition, he turned to Perfect Driver, selecting material from its catalogue alongside current favourites.
The episode was described as moving through house, tech house, deep house and a touch of bhangra. Featured artists include Kyle Watson, Claude VonStroke and Matthew Anthony.
Coh-hul’s Play it Loud 08 episode opens with ClubDisco’s Zapata on Sundries, bringing in Nu-Disco before Heart Saver’s Get Your Way on Monoside adds Funky House. Omson’s Could It Be Love on Too Many Rules then establishes the House Music foundation.
Kyle Watson and Warner Case’s I Don’t Like Anyone on Spinnin’ Deep brings in Bass House pressure before Claude VonStroke and Mike Kerrigan’s I Caught A Vibe on DIRTYBIRD introduces Tech House. Black Fancy’s Withcha on CUFF follows, before Ekoboy’s Tricks on Box Of Cats and Marlon Sadler’s Vanilla ACE edit of Hit Me Up on Wyldcard keep the club focus firm.
Kyle Watson’s Way Down and Plastic Robots and Steve Darko’s Times UP, both on Mau5trap, sustain that direction. The Sponges’ Gotta Move On on Astrix AU shifts into Indie Dance before Scavazza’s Harry Romero remix of Shake Your Hearts returns to DIRTYBIRD.
Westend’s Prickly Pear on Insomniac Records, Lubelski’s Lost My Senses on DIRTYBIRD and Overthinking and Holt 88’s Sundown on Sweets & Treats hold the middle of the set together. Mihalis Safras brings Garoubalo from Snatch!, while Crackazat’s What You’re Feeling on Z Records revisits the disco-leaning opening tone.
Panjabi MC’s Jogi, released through Superstar Recordings, provides the programme’s World Music moment before the Perfect Driver Music sequence begins with Sven Lochenhoer’s Big Poppin. Mark Starr and Lux Groove’s We Don’t Stop and Kovaxx’s Dollie lead to Sion’s I’m Sorry, which supplies the set’s Mainstage turn.
Jonas Tempel’s Antibass, Holt 88’s Thus Stori, Alex Index’s Peer Pressure and Mark Starr and Sage Armstrong’s HUNNID BANDZ keep Perfect Driver Music at the centre of the closing stretch. Alex Index’s Uh Track introduces Breaks, after which Mark Starr and Lux Groove’s Know This, BURN1’s Gotta Get Up, Lenny Kiser’s Cool Guy Sounds, KE and Matthew Anthony’s Swerve, Holt 88’s Spin Spin, Wood Holly and Matthew Anthony’s Exercise, Steve Darko’s Pucha and Sven Lochenhoer’s Candy bring the episode to its final club-ready run.
