Ezmun presents the final edition of Cooking With Gas on Scientific Sound Asia, with Esher joining him for the second hour. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.
Cooking With Gas was a weekly programme curated by Ezmun around darker, percussive and groove-led electronic music. Episode 20 brought the series to a close, with the two-hour format divided between Ezmun in the opening hour and Esher taking over for the second.
Originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom, Ezmun later relocated to Vietnam while developing his work as a DJ and producer. His path followed the familiar progression from bedroom mixing and house parties into club appearances and a wider involvement with underground electronic music.
By 2019, he had performed in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City. His sets drew from minimal half-time 140, leftfield bass, percussion-heavy club music and darker rhythmic material, giving Cooking With Gas a distinctive identity across its run.
The programme also gave Ezmun room to feature friends and lesser-known selectors rather than concentrating only on established names. That approach made the series as much about community and discovery as it was about his own selections.
During a period spent in Melbourne, Ezmun continued developing his interest in production and the local underground scene. His Instagram documented that wider activity and his ongoing connection with electronic music outside Vietnam.
The second hour of this final episode features Esher, a Melbourne-based artist with a background spanning several areas of electronic music. His production experience had already taken in Trance, Techno and Dubstep before his sound moved increasingly towards darker bass-driven material.
Influences including Mad Zach, Ivy Lab, Noisia and Imanu helped shape his approach to production. His SoundCloud reflects an interest in expansive atmospheres, detailed drum programming and heavy low-end rather than relying on straightforward dancefloor structures.
Esher’s sets and productions are also characterised by gritty basslines and complex rhythmic movement. His Mixcloud and Instagram provide further examples of that darker, more technical direction.
The pairing of Ezmun and Esher gives the final Cooking With Gas episode a natural sense of continuity. Both artists share an interest in bass-heavy underground music, but each approaches it from a different production and DJing background.
Episode 20 therefore works as both a closing chapter for Ezmun’s series and a snapshot of the wider network around the programme. The final edition brings together two selectors connected by a shared interest in atmosphere, rhythm and experimental bass music.
Ezmun begins the first hour of Cooking With Gas Episode 20 with A. Fruit's remix of Root For The Villain and Calculon's "Collusion", opening the programme with Footwork Jungle before Redraft with Kid Kun shift the rhythm firmly into Drum and Bass. Invadhurts, Flava D and Icicle's remix of Sustance keep that momentum running, followed by Alibi and the Vandal Records collaboration from Nscape, Inya and M.Justa.
Redraft, Hp Ritch and Kid Kun continue with "Monday Mood" before Minor Forms, Hybris and Calculon with 6 Blocc and Jaybee deepen the first hour's bass-heavy direction. Special Request's "Stairfoot Lane Bunker" in the Minor Science remix supplies the main Breaks diversion before Dunk brings the programme immediately back into Drum and Bass.
Enei with Jakes and Particle, S.P.Y and Chopstick Dubplate with Jah Mason and Louie Rankin take Ezmun's section into its closing run, combining harder drum programming with dub and vocal influences. A white-label Drum and Bass remix of Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On" closes the first hour, giving the transition into Esher's guest set a familiar vocal reference after an otherwise underground-focused selection.
Esher begins the second hour with his own "Oculus" before Fre4knc with Klinical, Kasra with Enei and DRS, and Charli Brix with Visages and DRS establish a concentrated Drum and Bass sequence. Skeptical's remix of Mefjus leads into QZB, Wingz, MVRK with Dub Personal and Enei, while Flexout Audio, Critical Music and Overview Music become recurring label anchors throughout an hour built almost entirely from deeper, technical and stripped-back DnB.
The latter part keeps the pressure high through Subtension, Document One, Amoss, Workforce, Gyrofield with Inkwill, Buunshin and Halogenix before Noisia and Phace's "Micro Organism" arrives in Buunshin's remix. Space Journey and Synergy with Buunshin maintain the futuristic edge before Urbandawn and Tyson Kelly close with "Come Together" on Hospital Records, completing an episode overwhelmingly centred on Drum and Bass with brief Footwork Jungle and Breaks departures.
