Ezmun presents Cooking With Gas episode 09 on Scientific Sound Asia, with a second-hour guest mix from Jonathan Thomlinson. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Cooking With Gas is a weekly exploration of percussive, groove-led and dark music curated by Ezmun. Episode 09 begins with Ezmun’s one-hour selection, moving from tech house into harder industrial-leaning techno before Jonathan Thomlinson takes over for the second hour.
A photographer by profession, Jonny has long held a strong passion for dance music. While studying in Manchester, he became a regular at Soup Kitchen, The White Hotel and other notable parties in the city, eventually building his own vinyl collection.
His mix for this episode is an energetic selection of favourite techno records, from minimal through acid to industrial. Outside music, Jonny runs Then There Was Us, a photography magazine dedicated to showcasing and discussing contemporary photography, writing and journalism online and in print.
Ezmun, originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom, relocated to Vietnam to pursue his ambitions as a DJ and producer. During the pandemic, he temporarily moved to Melbourne and pushed his sound through his weekly radio show.
Like many DJs, his path began in the bedroom before progressing to house parties with close friends and then club environments. By 2019, Ezmun had performed in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City as his place in the underground scene grew.
Drawing on the dark, sparse energy of minimal halftime 140s and the percussive edge of leftfield bass, he blends these influences into techno sets marked by contrast and tension. At the time of publication, he was exploring Melbourne’s nightlife, developing his production skills and planning to release original material while hoping to return to Vietnam.
Cooking With Gas gives Ezmun space to showcase friends, emerging talents and the genres with which he connects most deeply. The programme also offers listeners a focused view of his musical interests.
Ezmun's Cooking With Gas episode 09 with Jonathan Thomlinson opens with Joe’s Tail Lift on Hessle Audio, bringing Breaks into the first hour. Bakongo’s Bopster on Roska Kicks & Snares follows with a bass/club focus that suits the show’s percussive opening.
Dani Sbert’s Industrial Gain on ZYX introduces Deep Tech House before Slam’s Antigone remix of Positive Education on VC Recordings turns towards Techno. Lucy and Rødhåd’s 170913 on WSNWG, Makaton’s Hill of Men on Rodz-Konez and Eerie Volver’s Lacuna on Concrete Records establish the peak-time techno pressure.
Barks’ Inigo Kennedy remix of Stop People on Rodz-Konez returns to breaks, while Psyk’s Throb on Enemy Records and N:CK’s Descending Loop on Concrete Records restore the firm techno pulse. Karenn’s Pace Yourself on Token brings raw, deep and hypnotic techno into the hour, before Death Abyss’s We Are What You Should Fear on Rodz-Konez, Regis’s remix of Hardened Chord and Avalon Emerson’s Hurdy Gurdy DJ Tool on Shtum complete Ezmun’s increasingly forceful sequence.
Jonathan Thomlinson begins with Afrodeutsche’s Make The Call on River Rapid, placing Electro at the front of the second hour. Art Vandelay’s Dirty Thirty on Birdie introduces House Music, while Eric Copeland’s Reheated on L.I.E.S. Records and Specter & Chicago Deep’s Linkwood edit of Sonar Pulse bring more unconventional electronic textures.
Dresvn’s Shelly Beach on Acido and Xes Noiz’s Non-Stop on Nation Of Noise move from techno into Dub Techno, with Hedrome’s Hard Education and Setaoc Mass’s Floating supplying the deeper, hypnotic material. D.Dan’s Damager on ASR013 and Kamikaze Space Programme’s RTG and SCRAM on Mord raise the intensity, before Perc’s Driller and Ejeca’s Trance 1 provide the hard-edged final stretch.
