Coh-hul presents Play It Loud 03 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Coh-hul is a well-known DJ and producer based in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as an artist on the DJ agency. His first live performance was at a New Year’s Eve party in Northern Thailand in 2015, and he has since focused on playing music for crowds.
Coh-hul’s style is mainly Tech-house and Tech-funk, informed by Dirtybird, This Ain’t Bristol, Relief, Snatch! and Perfect Driver. Funky drum patterns, forceful bass lines and futuristic sci-fi melodies are key parts of his selections.
His approach to reading a crowd helps him judge when to intensify the energy and when to ease it back. After living in Saigon for three years, he hosted his own Tech-House nights and created busy atmospheres for the city’s audiences.
Listeners may have encountered Coh-hul through one of his many residencies around the city. His best-known party is the monthly “AfterDark” event, co-hosted with Broma:Not A Bar.
He is a DJ member of the “DTOX” party brand and was involved with WHAT? Events. Other Ho Chi Minh City venues where he has played include The Lighthouse, Saigon Soul Pool Party, Piu Piu, Upper Saigon, Hideout, Last Call, Indika, Saigon Outcast and Rogue.
Outside Saigon, he has played the Mui Ne Music & Arts Festival and The Rock Island Club’s New Year’s Eve event on Phu Quoc Island. His interest in Dirtybird took him alone to the Dirtybird Campout festival in the United States during summer 2017.
While in the United States, Coh-hul set up a renegade party at Venice Beach in Los Angeles and performed for Stacy’s at Melrose in Phoenix, Arizona. In summer 2018, he played Le Chapiteau in Marseille to a sold-out venue, a performance he regarded as the best set of his career.
Over the preceding year, Coh-hul invested in a studio and set a new musical goal. He aimed to focus on production and release music through established labels, building on his reputation as an up-and-coming producer and DJ.
Play It Loud showcases Tech-house and Tech-funk, following an earlier edition centred on Coh-hul’s favourite releases from Relief. This edition gives attention to Box Of Cats Records alongside several of his current favourites.
Coh-hul’s Play It Loud 03 episode on Scientific Sound Asia opens with Vangelis Kostoxenakis’ Play It Loud on DIRTYBIRD, setting a firm Tech House foundation. Coh-hul follows with his own Andrea, while Rufus Gibson’s What Cha Want (DJ Tool) adds another early selection.
Mark Broom’s Hear Me on Rekids brings in House Music before Enky Jane’s Brain Damage on My Techno Weighs A Ton reaches Peak Time Techno. Kasto’s Late on OKNF Records and Tony H’s Simple Directions on Late Night Munchies return the programme to club-focused rhythms.
DJ E-Clyps’ Scooty Woop on DIRTYBIRD leads into Mike Dunn’s If I Cannot Get Down on Classic Music Company, pairing Tech House with a house-rooted cut. Gene Farris’ Space Girl on DIRTYBIRD and Bontan’s Shake It on DFTD keep the momentum direct, with Coh-hul’s Get Shot Homie placed between them.
Disclosure’s Tondo on Universal-Island Records Ltd. and Julio Bashmore’s Husk on Broadwalk Records LTD provide a House Music passage before The Sponges’ Make It Juicy on Box Of Cats arrives. Middath’s Big Momma, Gabe & Rocksted’s Lonely Feelings and Machine Drivers’ Little Noise, all on Box Of Cats, strengthen the label focus.
Two Tails’ 8-Bit Kiss on Box Of Cats introduces Bass House pressure before OMNOM & Steady Rock’s On Sight and Nico Mendez’s 300lb Beat return to Tech House. Ekoboy’s Salty Maria on Box Of Cats follows The Sponges & Kyle Watson’s The Ratchet Express, keeping the latter half centred on the same label.
The Sponges’ Funked Up and Nick Olivetti’s Orange Juice bring further Bass House material from Box Of Cats, while Keizer Jelle’s Model Girls shifts back to Tech House. The Sponges’ Space Funk 75, Tom Classic’s Ahh and Mancodex’s Never Hold Back lead into Wongo’s Sub Circus (Steve Darko & Westend Remix), closing the selection with a House Music remix from Box Of Cats.
