Yushka presents Funk Show 5 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Hailing from Nottingham in the UK, Yushka developed his DJ skills at free parties, raves, festivals and club nights across the UK, Ireland and, from the mid-2000s, Vietnam. He was a founding member of Nottingham's What The Funk? DJ collective and is behind the Shits and Giggles and Hot-Point Sound Systems.
His interest in musical composition began in his teenage years, when he enjoyed making mixtapes. Without the funds for DJ equipment, he used basic software and a CD recorder to make mixes for school, earning respect from his peers as a DJ.
In 2004, aged 22, he had his first opportunity to perform on DJ equipment. By 2006, he was hosting weekly Sh!ts and Giggles nights in Nottingham's underground bars and clubs with co-host and founder Animinimal (Deck-starter/Catalyst).
When the venue's PA system proved inadequate, the team supplemented it with their own equipment and established the Sh!ts and G!ggles sound system. After time spent around music with Matty C of Hanoi Hi-Fi, the Hotpoint Sound System of Nottingham emerged.
The sound systems led to underground free parties and partnerships with East Midlands promoters including Substance D&B, Pure Filth, TSA303, Monkey Nuts and Psycle. These promoters contributed to the multi-genre nights and parties associated with Hotpoint and S&G.
Yushka has supported Drum and Bass artists EZ Rollers and Kenny Ken, and has performed at Sidewalk Hanoi - Bar / Kitchen / Events in Hanoi, plus Broma: Not a Bar, Arcan and Bann Bar in HCMC. His selections range from chilled, laid-back beats to Breaks, Hip Hop, Electro, Tech and D&B, with Funk and Soul central to the mix.
In 2019, he was a resident DJ at the Sunday Funk Sessions at Arcan in Ho Chi Minh City. Funk Show 5 first aired on Friday, 21 June 2019.
Yushka's Funk Show 5 episode for Scientific Sound Asia opens with Black Soul's Black Soul Music on Wagram and The Meters' Cissy Strut on Josie, establishing an R&B-led start. Nina Simone's Sinner Man on RCA introduces Jazz alongside Bill Withers' Use Me on Sussex Records.
Joe Cocker's rock recording Woman to Woman on Virgin Records Ltd gives way to Marlena Shaw's California Soul on Cadet and Bossa Rio's Saiupa on A&M. O.V. Wright's Ace of Spades on Universal brings in Soul, before The Chambers Brothers' Funky on Columbia adds another rock-rooted record.
The Bar-Kays supply Too Hot To Stop (Pt. 1) on Spectrum Music and Move Your Boogie Body on Mercury, moving from R&B into a more dancefloor-focused passage. Geraldine Hunt's Can't Fake the Feeling on Prism Records brings Nu-Disco into view, followed by The Jackson Sisters' I Believe in Miracles on Tiger Lilly Records.
Herbie Hancock's Bring Down the Birds on MGM and George Benson's California Dreamin' on CTI Records return to jazz-informed material. The Funk Hunters' Featurecast Instrumental Remix of Oh Shit on Westwood Recordings and Fort Knox Five's The Brazilian Hipster on Fort Knox Recordings lead into Stickybuds' Kingston Funk on Big M Productions, a confirmed Breakbeat selection.
Opiuo's Father Funk Remix of Life on Funk Therapy and Empresarios' Telephunken Remix of Happy Track on Fort Knox Recordings introduce House Music to the later section. Funk Ferret's Get Back To Funk on Boogie Boutique follows with Ghetto Funk character.
Marlena Shaw's A-Skillz Remix - The Funk Hunters ReSoul of California Soul on Ghetto Funk is followed by her Keep Pounding on Bombstrikes and The Funk Hunters' Soul Man on Westwood Recordings. Def Cut's Battle of the Year on Elder Records precedes The Who's Funk Hunters Remix of Who Are You on Ghetto Funk and Ray Charles' Deekline and Ed Solo Remix of Hit the Road Jack on Jungle Cakes, ending on a Dance & EDM note.
