Coh-hul presents his guest show, recorded for Scientific Sound Asia on 10 June 2019. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform, with House Music radio programming connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Coh-hul was a DJ and producer based in Ho Chi Minh City and a member of Scientific Sound Asia's Asian DJ Agency. His first public performance took place at a New Year's Eve party in Northern Thailand in 2015, and he pursued sets designed to impress audiences with his music.
Coh-hul's style is primarily tech-house and tech-funk, with influences from Dirtybird, This Ain't Bristol, Relief, Snatch! and Perfect Driver record labels. He enjoys creating groovy drum beats, heavy bass lines and futuristic sci-fi melodies.
His ability to read crowds informed when he intensified a set and when he gave the room space. Having lived in Saigon for three years, he hosted his own Tech-House evenings and created energetic atmospheres for audiences.
His best-known event was the monthly “AfterDark” party, which he co-hosted with Broma: Not A Bar. He was also a DJ for the “DTOX” party brand and had previously worked with WHAT? Events.
Other places in the city where audiences could have seen him included The Lighthouse, Saigon Soul Pool Party, Piu Piu, Upper Saigon, Hideout, Last Call, Indika, Saigon Outcast and Rogue. He also performed outside Saigon at the Mui Ne Music & Arts Festival and at Rock Island Club on New Year's Eve on Phu Quoc Island.
Because of his affection for Dirtybird, he attended the Dirtybird Campout festival alone in the summer of 2017. While in the United States, he organised a renegade party at Venice Beach in Los Angeles, California, and performed at Stacy's on Melrose in Phoenix, Arizona.
In the summer of 2018, Coh-hul played a sold-out gig at Le Chapiteau in Marseille, which he described as the best set of his career. Over the following year, he invested in a studio and embarked on a new musical direction.
His goal at the time was to focus on production and release music on reputable labels, developing his profile as a producer and DJ. He was available for bookings through the agency and contributed this guest mix to Scientific Sound Asia.
Coh-hul's guest show opens with Dateless' The Pick Up Artist on Country Club Disco, establishing a House Music foundation. James Curd featuring KE follows with Laid Back With It on Astrx, bringing in the tighter pressure of Tech House.
Kolombo and Ron Carroll's We Disco Baby keeps the early section buoyant before The Sponges' Space Funk '75 on Box Of Cats introduces Bass House weight. Andreas Henneberg's Little Peace Of Me on Desert Hearts Records and BOT's Hannah Wants remix of All My Life To Live on Brock Wild return the set to tech-house territory.
Gene Farris and Tim Baresko's Fly With Me and Codes' 100% Skills, both on DIRTYBIRD, sharpen the central club focus. Jonas Temple's Antibass on Perfect Driver Music, Vangelis Kostoxenakis' Play It Loud on DIRTYBIRD and C.H.A.Y's Meugitions of Tym on BIRDFEED sustain that direct rhythmic approach.
Cats N Dogs and Joseph Ashworth's Factory Setting on DIRTYBIRD leads into Papa Marlin's So Long on Relief and Machine Drivers' Little Noise on Box Of Cats. Loco Dice and William Djoko's Out Of Reach on Desolat then broadens the groove with another House Music cut.
Kill Frenzy and Justin Jay's Lava on DIRTYBIRD and Shiba San's Oh My God on Repopulate Mars keep the mix firmly club-facing. James Curd and Likasto's Claude Vonstroke remix of I Wanna Freak on Play It Down, followed by Late Eighties' Abba Zabba on BIRDFEED, prepares the way for Justin Jay's Cash Money on DIRTYBIRD and its Peak Time Techno edge.
Dateless returns with The Shakery on Club Sweat, while Detlef's JayDee on Relief and Mele's The 95 Vibe on Club Bad bring the set back towards house-rooted movement. Joseph Ashworth's Trooper on Life And Death adds Melodic House and Techno tension before Deee-Lite's Groove Is In The Heart on Rhino/Elektra supplies an acapella-led closing flourish.
