Bicycle Corporation presented Roots 6 on Scientific Sound Asia in 2018. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the collaboration between Italian DJ and producer Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. Formed in 2009, the project brought Mei’s experience as a DJ together with Ugliano’s production work.
Mei began DJing in Turin in 1991, during an important period for the city’s underground electronic scene. His association with the Urban People collective placed him within a local network active in electronic music events and club culture.
A residency at Pacha in Sharm el-Sheikh formed a significant part of Marco Mei’s international DJ career. His appearances internationally have also included Woo Bar in Bali, The Mansion in Shanghai, Fuse in Brussels and The Observatory in Ho Chi Minh City.
Marco Mei is based in Taipei and works across a wider South East Asian network. He is available for bookings through Scientific Sound Asia’s DJ agency and broadcasts weekly on its radio station.
Bicycle Corporation has released more than fifty productions and remixes across Deep House, Tech House, French House and Techno. Its confirmed label catalogue includes Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, Suka and GrooveTraxx amongst others.
The pair’s work also sat alongside Electronic Roots, a platform for broader electronic music and Asian guest DJs. Roots 6 provided space for an archival selection of world music that extended beyond Bicycle Corporation’s recorded club material.
Bicycle Corporation’s Roots 6 on Scientific Sound Asia radio presents an archive selection of music connecting Funk, Disco, Afrobeat, Jazz Music, Soul and Electronica. The episode features music from Yello, The Temptations, Vangelis, Lee Ritenour, James Brown, Fela Kuti, Space, Patrick Cowley and Irakere.
Yello opens with The Race, placing the mix inside an electronic and rhythmic framework from the start of the show. The Temptations follow with Papa Was A Rollin' Stone in Kay's Mama Funkin Edit, bringing a Soul foundation into the early section.
Flying Fish moves the programme into Funk with Blowpipe, before Vangelis adds a further Electronica reference through Dervish D. Lee Ritenour’s On The Boardwalk then brings Jazz Music into the sequence, giving the opening section a wider instrumental range.
Claudia Barry’s Love For The Sake Of Love shifts the episode towards Disco before John Tropea returns to jazz-funk with Living In The Jungle. James Brown’s Funky Drummer then brings one of Funk’s most sampled drum breaks into the middle of the show.
Fela Kuti’s Zombie introduces Afrobeat, followed by African Suite’s Pygmy and Flora Purim’s Andei. Earth, Wind & Fire then add another Funk entry with Drum Song, linking percussion, groove and band-led arrangement.
Haircut One Hundred’s Favourite Shirts and Timmy Thomas’ Africano in the re-edit version keep the selection rhythm-led before Space’s Magic Fly returns to electronic Disco. Patrick Cowley’s Megatron Man and Daniel Wang’s Warped extend that club direction through synth-led and disco-rooted material.
Candido’s Serenade To A Savage adds a percussion-heavy Disco reference before Colette Romano Farinatti’s Ambabaia brings the programme back towards Afrobeat influence. Irakere’s Chekere Son introduces Latin Music, before James Brown closes Roots 6 with The Payback.
